Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

    It means that if a topic is being discussed and you don't say anything, people might think you're not very smart. but if you do say something when you don't know what you're talking about, they will be sure you're not smart. So it's better not to say anything.

    You are better to remain silent if you do not know the answer - and even if you do but are not sure, you would be advised to remain silent.

    (Wisdom some on this site might well heed).

    it means ignorance is bliss. it's better not knowing and seeming oblivious than knowing the truth.
