Should the IATA label "MOML- Muslim Meal" into "HLML- Halal Meal"?

As far as Airline catering goes, the IATA often label their Muslim meals as MOML or some airlines even say that it's a non-Pork meal. This would really raise concerns too, especially among the Muslim customers.

Are airline meals that say that are labeled as "Muslim Meal" really Halal, especially from an airline that is based in a non-Islamic country?

As sometimes, it's very deceptive and that most airlines often have to battle costs in supplying specialized meals like this, since many airlines treat this as a special request.

However for the airlines such as Emirates, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways they all offer Halal meals, without any special requests.

Should MOML be changed to HLML? I think it is okay to keep MOML, and it is also okay to change it to HLML. Basically it is the same and I don't think Muslims will be offended (I am a Muslim). To Muslim pax (who eats only Halal meal - not those who doesn't mind), as long as they get a good MOML, it's good enough.

Of course non-Pork meal is not the same as Halal meal, because Halal meal doesn't only mean no Pork, but also prohibits other animals such as frogs, snails, etc. If a meal contains escargots, it might be a no Pork meal but it is not a Halal meal.

When we talk about meals, it comes back to the catering service provider (not necessarily the airline itself), such as LSG Skychef, etc. If the caterer provides food to an airline coming from a "Muslim country" usually they will request the airline to give them a certification (having the airline staff coming over to observe and advise them about how to prepare Halal meals, etc).

As a Muslim, I don't really understand why Halal meal has to be too expensive. All they need are just one supervisor who really knows about Halal meal preparation (doesn't have to be a Muslim him/herself) and also a Muslim to slaughter chicken for meals with chickens. Of course it would be expensive to slaughter cows by themselves. Then again they can always skip chicken and beef and go for seafood prepared the Halal way, which is not that hard. Just don't include lard or any source from pigs, and make sure all cooking utensils are not mixed to cook with normal meals. The chefs can even be non Muslims as they don't need to recite anything from Quran or things like that. Just, cook. That's all.

Yes Emirates, Etihad, Qatar, Gulf Air, Malaysia Airlines, Royal Brunei, Garuda Indonesia, etc provides Halal meal for all routes. Recently a politician in Australia claimed that those who eats Halal meal will become Muslims - which is totally wrong.

Anyway, a Muslim usually would check the background of the airline they are flying and if they really are not confident with the airline's MOML, they would just have bread or even having meals before and after flying. It's nice of you to think about HLML though :)

If in doubt of EXACTLY what the meal is you can always contact the airline and talk to a HUMAN to clarify your specific needs. Be it a peanut allergy, sea food allergy or gluten allergy. You can even clarify vegetarian or veggan.Do you want kosher or Halal ASK and you will be informed. Sadly not everyone in the world is knowledged in ALL of the different diets that others have. Service staff will help you to clarify what your needs are. A list on a web page cannot attempt to meet ALL requirements for EVERYBODY.A pork free meal could mean allergy to pork not a religious prohibition. CLARIFY what YOU need. General terms have different meanings in other countries.

Well yes. Why bring Halal meals on board an aircraft when no one's going to eat them. An airline wants to order a special meal only if they have to and when a customer requests them. This goes for Vegan, Vegetarian, Asian Vegetarian, Hindu, Kosher, Low Sodium, Gluten-Free, and many other meals.

Tuff, why should be specially catered for? Jews aren't. If they want special food, they should either supply it themselves, are fly an arab airline.

Interesting fact, when I worked is Saudi, Saudi nations going abroad had to fly Saudia, the nation airline. When flying for personal reason, they avoided it, so they could eat and drink wastern style, and the women could remove their abaya, revealing short western style clothing.
