Problems Mucking out a horse?

Ok so I have a slight problem, my livery yard is closed and I never mucked out my mare this morning. There is no one around to do it. I was not made aware that the yard was only open for an hour in the morning.

I mucked her out yesterday properly and took out 70% of her bed and put down a clean one. I was only going to skip out today quickly. I removed most if not all the dirt from the stable.

So what are the chances she will be ok untill tomorrow? I hate leaving her bed like this, I really don't like not mucking out, but what can I do really. I can't break into the property to muck her out.

I should mention I only bed down half the stable and she is on rubber matting.

Update:

Obviously not a horse owner sisypus. I'll leave you to sit in your own urine and faeces for the day and then we'll talk.

Update 2:

She is being fed, she got her hay and hard feed this morning and will get more hay later on in the evening, he fed them all extra. She is grand hay wise for the day, it's just mucking her out that I'm worried about. She's clean enough however she's in season so she may be very wet, I skipped her out at 5pm last night so she's been in there since then.

Reason why the yard is closed is because the owner wants to celebrate christmas too, don't expect him to stay on the yard all day just because a few people may turn up to see their horses.

Update 3:

I've called and texted, no answer. I'm tempted to hop on my bike and cycle down and try hop the fence!

Update 4:

I'm heading up now, I'll hop the fence if need be

Update 5:

Went up to the yard, it was all locked up, luckilly I got a call from the owner 5 mins later saying he was cooking the turkey which is why he never answered the phone, he gave her a quick skip out for me,all is good. Tomorrow she's getting 2 hours turn out in the field to compensate being in all day today, she was out 2 hours yesterday.

Your horse should be fine. Just make sure you can get in tomorrow morning and muck out your mare. Clean her up tomorrow too, especially her hooves. They manure and hay can clog up and make her hooves get infected.

Try and call and ask if you can go muck out. I'm just worried about her hooves. I don't think you or your mare wants the vet/farrier over.

That is not very good. There should be a notice board to state that the yard will only be open for so long. Also horses are 365 day responsibility - no days off for Christmas!

Ideally she should be mucked out - I know you do not like it, but it is a necessary part of keeping a horse.

I hope that you ride her in walk tomorrow for at least half an hour before you begin to trot her. Horses left in for a day but still fed hard feed on full rations are prone to suffering from tying up within 20 minutes of starting work. This is an extremely painful and paralysing disease which is potentially fatal and is caused by over feeding and under exercising.

Happy Christmas - and fence hopping!

Don't worry, I'm sure she will be ok until tomarrow. The fact that she is in season worries me though. Maybe ask the owner if you can hop the fance but that would still be very dangerous.

If you could just get her too quickly drop off the keys to the gate or get it from her, you can do it. Or go very very early tomarrow morning. If she gets fed tonight, offer to pay the feeder if you can reach them, to muck her stall.

I'm sorry, I can't really help you with this. But the BO didn't inform you, so quickly opening up the gate for you should be her responsibility.

But I'm sure she will be ok. Good luck.

To those being rude and saying "get over it" ect. Maybe you should get it right. At least this horse owner is genuinely concerned about their horse and making an effort to make sure all is alright. Some wouldn't make that effort.

And now to answering the q. Now, while she is in season makes it a little concerning, but since it sounds like she is always kept in good conditon, and it's only been 1 day, she should be fine. But if it makes you feel better, get there asap to clean out her stall. She truly should be fine though, many only clean out every other day.

It's somewhat concerning though that you can't have access to your horse when you want/need! Sure, as mentioned above, owners place owners rules, but you're paying to keep her there and it's not something i would accept.

Anyways, good luck with everything. Hope she's ok!

a private barn can set any rules they want to, and you either take them or leave them. Many barns are closed to boarders after a certain time of day and early on Sundays. There is nothing unusual about a barn being closed on a holiday like Christmas. Usually there is care and monitoring of the horses by barn personnel, but they don't want to deal with the boarders which is why they set the rule. Your horse will be fine until tomorrow.

  • Why is the place closed that is Odd, especially no one told you this. I know at a few barns ive been at the BO told us we didnt have to come out on christmas and she would clean every ones stalls and feed, But she came up and told us so it wasnt something we had to worry about.

She should probably be fine, i only clean my horses stalls every other day. Though they are in at night and out dureing the day and are extremly clean. ( before people critisize me between my 3 stalls for two days i only have to dump like one small wheel barrow, becuase they are clean). Can you call the BO and ask if it was possible for her to clean your stall if you payed her a little extra?

I don't understand why they are closed - fair enough saying the staff aren't working, but to stop people going up to see their horses is a bit weird.

You have the right to access to the horse (what if you needed to change a wound dressing 3/4 times a day?!)

Personally I would just go up there, your horse should be fine for a day, but I would raise the issues with the yard owners.

It's always a good idea to ask about holiday policies and plan ahead accordingly. Now you know this, so plan appropriately in the future.

I find it odd the barn owner restricts the boarder's access to their horses, especially for activities like cleaning stalls on any day holiday or not. Whatever though, her barn her rules. Sounds like she doesn't want to be bothered with business on Christmas day so you might want to stop bothering her with calls and texts unless you want to piss her off.

Your horse will die from her stall going unpicked for a day. The world will not spin off its rotational axis and implode, life on Earth will not cease to exist. She will be fine.

She'll be fine! She'll prob have what I call "poopy feet"! But she'll be okay as long as she has hay and clean water.

If you end up hoping the Fence ....good luck! Lol
