Do you ever stop wanting to express yourself?

The thing is, I've realized something in being a teenager, and watching other teenagers -- we're obsessed with expressing ourselves.

Fake or real tattoos, piercings, hair dye, stickers, logos, band t-shirts - it seems like everything we wear, buy, or try to be has something to do with us expressing ourselves.

I've noticed it in myself, this want of self-expression. And I'm wondering... Does it ever go away, when you get older? You don't see adults acting like teens do about self-expression, usually. And what do you think causes teenagers to be so obsessed with expressing ourselves?

When you have learned life is an expression within itself; then and only then will you understand. ...and some will never come to terms.

I think the key point is that teenagers are trying to discover who it is they are. First and foremost, they want others to notice them. Tattoos, ear, nose, tongue piercings etc. seem to be a way for some to express themselves. On the flip side, if most of your friends have gone to this extreme... you could ignore the trends and do nothing. As one becomes an adult you are faced with more and more responsibility. Successful adults have discovered who they are and no longer have a need for this level of self expression. Identify inside yourself who it is that you really are. What do you like? What do you dislike? What work or career interests you? The world is a great place because it is filled with individuals. Doing what everyone else does diminishes who you are. I always told my son to be himself and not to get caught up in what the crowd was doing. The key to being a teenager is that you want to let the world know that you are here. By being an individual, you will be recognized sooner than by being one of many in a nameless crowd.

The need to express oneself never disappears, but is achieved in different ways depending on age. The teenager is highly concerned with individuality and defining themselves as a person, and as such their aesthetic appearance is often reflective of this. This need for uniqueness tends to diminish once you reach adulthood, but you still see adults expressing themselves, through often more through art, writing, or conversation. For some people the will to individuality never dies, and you can see a great number of 30 year olds who are still getting tattoos and piercings, and wearing their favorite band shirts.

Yea , I've felt that way too . Mainly because whatever I did whether it was changing

my hair color or wearing diffrent clothes it felt like I was just doing it to impress

someone . I think that today it's become so maistream , that I don't even bother

    to express myself .

They are trying to be an, "individual" because that cannot come to terms with the fact that we aren't special. For some people, it never goes away. For myself, I feel that it has...or at least I do not go out of my way to try.
