Stool softener for cats?

I have a rescue kitten that is approximately 7-9 months old that has been in my care for about 2 months now. While defecating, he will be on his hunches pushing and suddenly let out a painful scream and bite on anything that is available such as the blanket that is draped and reachable over the trainer cage I have him isolated within.

He has been to the Vet today and was given an enema to clear out the feces that is building up in his intestines causing a pot belly appearance. I did take a stool sample with me that is being examined for worms though he has already been treated with panacur, albon, and strongid for round worms, giardia, etc. His stools are not loose nor severely hard. The stools do not consist of blood yet coats the outer part of the stool as it passes through the colon when exiting the rectum.

He is being given a special diet of ID prescription food from the Vet and 250mg of Lysine BID for a total of 500mg's a day.

Is there anything else that I can give this poor little creature to help soften his stools besides 100% pure pumpkin? Maybe an over the counter stool softener of some sort that anyone knows about that I don't. The Vet is closed on Sunday and I hate to wait till Monday. The Vet also found that due to the straining he does have a hernia and I'd like to prevent further damage.

Anyone that has any knowledge or past experience with this?

Thank you.

You can use things like Metamucil or Miralax. Miralax seems to be preferred by many cat parents. Miralax is a quarter of a teaspoon, up to 3x a day. You can mix into canned food with a little extra water. It's pretty tasteless/odorless. If for some reason your cat refuses, you can mix with water and give with an oral syringe. Good luck!

PS - long term, he may need to drink more water. Canned food only diet with a little extra water added to it might be enough to get him back on track permanently. Some cats eating dry food don't drink enough water.

Make sure that your cat is getting sufficient water. If it's an indoor cat, they need to have greens (outdoor cats will eat grass). You can purchase a grow kit at just about any pet store. There is Cat Lax, Laxatone (and I'm sure many others) that is a laxative and it also helps to relieve hairballs, that can be found at the pet store as well. There are brands of dry cat food that are specifically for hairballs. There are foods with brown rice that implements fiber in their diet to help them get going. If none of this helps and they haven't had any bowel movement you need to get them to the vet. They may have a blocked digestive system or impacted feces that has to come out, otherwise you're going to have an extremely sick cat because all of those toxins and bacteria will have a severe effect on their health. Hope this helps . . . it's miserable being constipated as a human and our cats are no different

Don't give him pumpkin. Try instead to give him soft food blended with some water. If you give him canned fish cat food, just put a bit of water in it and stir a bit. The extra fluid will help the digestive system and make it easier to go to the toilet. Always have fresh clean filtered water available for him, but don't force him to drink. Other than that, just follow your vet's instructions.

Have you tried Laxatone yet? It comes in a paste form available at most pet supply stores. Many cats will lap it from your finger but if not, put a dab on top of a front paw and let them lick it off. It's always worked very well for me. Good luck!

you DID NOT tell us what the hell you are USUALLY feeding the poor cat and if it is only dry food than this could be your problem! Feed it WET CANNED FOOD and raw mince meat from the- supermarket------->> NO DRY FOOD only wet foods and natural raw meat which cats eat in the wild.

SOFT WET FOOD and hydrate him.
