Questions about septum piercings...?
Okay, so I have numerous questions about getting your septum pierced and such. First of all, I really want to have it done but I've never had anything pierced before, not even my ears (though I'm doing that soon), so I'm wondering how bad it hurts. I also had issues with frequent nosebleeds in the past, so I'm wondering if getting a septum piercing would make it start up again. Another thing I want to know is what is the typical type of jewelry the piercer puts in initially. Most of the pictures I've seen have been of the horseshoe barbell thingys, so I'm assuming those, although I don't know why. Is it because they're just more popular? Personally I don't really like the look of those, if I were to get my septum pierced I'd want just a plain segment ring, or maybe a cbr, although apparently segment rings are hard to deal with; is that true? I want to get a job and so I'm imagining switching daily back and forth between a segment ring and a retainer for work (once the piercing is completely healed of course); would that be a big hassle, or would it be too harsh on my nose? Oh right, and so would I be able to get my nose pierced initially with a segment ring or no? And what's the typical cost? And how do you choose where to get it done and who's reliable? And do the rings come in different diameters? In some pictures I've seen the rings people have in are right up against their noses and look really small, and I'd want mine to be away from my nose more and more noticeable, not like a little thing you have to squint at to tell what it is, ya know? So then would the key be to get a bigger gauge or bigger diameter? Okay, I've asked a lot of questions so I'm going to stop now lol. Any wisdom on this subject would be greatly appreciated though, so thanks! :)

1) getting your septum pierced is not entirely painless, but it's relatively quick and all it does is make your eyes water. if you've ever been accidentally or on purpose punched in the face, this is how it feels. you have nothing to compare it to, so you should be just fine. just make sure you eat the morning of, and try to stay calm.
2)i don't think it's going to cause any nosebleeds as there is really no relation between what's going on with your septum and your bridge. usually nosebleeds are caused by dry air and some heredity predisposition.
3) you can get a cbr or a segment if you wanted to as your initial jewelry. the main reason why people get horseshoes is so that they can flip it into their nostrils for work. of course you'll only be able to do that once it's fully healed, because otherwise it will hurt quite a bit
4) rings do come in different shapes and sizes and gauges indeed, you will be able to pick and choose one for your septum once the piercing heals. you can get a really snug one (i have one of those, it was custom curved by my piercer), or a bigger one. you'll also be able to stretch it to a bigger gauge if you wanted to. but everything will have to be after it heals.
5) the way you choose a piercer and a salon is the same way you choose pretty much anything : any reviews, personal testimonials, info on the website, all of that is helpful. come in to your local shops, ask around, ask the piercers. they will tell you everything you need to know, and if you decide they're legit, then go for it. look at piercing portfolios as well. the cost varies depending on the place and the state, at my shop it is 50 dollars including jewelry. it is not expensive. do not trust "daily deals" of 5 dollar piercings at someone's shop or house. this is not something to save on.
6) i would imagine having to take your ring out for work every day would be pretty annoying, but if you got a horseshoe, you could flip it inside your nose and then you won't see it.
