What foods are typical to underdeveloped countries.?
A youth group is getting ready to host a dinner to help raise hunger awareness. The way it works is people will pay $6 for a plate that represents one of 5 countries. Each country will fall into one of the 5 nourishment ratings provided by the World Food Programme. What I want to find out is a typical meal for a family that would fall into one of those ratings. 1 being least undernourished and 5 being greatest. Anyone do anything like this before or been to one? The countries used are:
1. US
2. Brasil
3. China
4. India
5. Ethiopia (or Haiti).
While I am able to find out what the specific cuisines are for that area, I'm unable to find out what the less fortunate are forced to eat every day. So any help would be greatly appreciated, or at least a point in the right direction
Corvato - yeah, I understand that. But while rice would be popular in China, you won't find it so much in Ethiopia. I'm also curious as to the ways they prepare it. I know in Ethiopia, the dish they prepare is served over a very basic flat-bread.
і ♥ нім - because Haiti and Ethiopia are the two worst countries in the world for hunger. Each country is tied for the highest undernourished population per capita. So that's why I chose one or the other. The countries I chose don't have anything to do with geographical location.

My boyfriend is from Haiti & rice is part of each of their meals. When I first started cooking for him, he didn't understand how we could eat meat & veggies with no rice.
BUT, why did you say Ethiopia or Haiti? They're two totally different countries in two totally different parts of the world.
Rice & dried beans are probably included in every one of these countries' menus, no matter how wealthy the eater is.

In Haiti you will most likely find the less fortunate eating rice and beans with some sort of stewed meat with vegetables (carrots, cabbage, eggplant, chayote squash). You will sometimes find boiled plantains and boiled sweet potatoes. Ground corn is also very popular. They serve it just like polenta or grits are served in the US but instead eat it with black beans or stewed meat.
It sounds like a very interesting project. good luck!

the most common food for hungry people are things like rice, potatoes, corn, etc... basically cheap food that will fill them up.
