mixing bananas with apples?

I left some riped bananas in the drawer with some green apples and these also riped fast, how can this be?

Ripening fruit gives off ethylene gas, which promotes further ripening. The traditional way to promote quick fruit ripening was to keep it in a bag with a ripe fruit. Your drawer is the same enclosed space.
