Is America the bad guy?
I used to be die hard patriot! A man that would defend to the very last his country's name, honor and values.
And something happened that changed my mind...
I started thinking... The media, our politicians, even us... we look at our country as being the good guys. The saviors of the world. The center of the free world and all that...
But are we really? Let's think about it:
1. Our country was founded on the genocide of millions of native Americans.
2. Our economy became one of the strongest in the world due to the exploitation of millions of African-American slaves.
3. In the last 100 years we started more wars than anybody in the whole wide world.
4. We are constantly attacking weaker nations to steal their resources.
5. Many Americans regard themselves as good Christians, and yet they support their country attacking other nations and killing millions of innocent people.
6. We have more murders per capita in our country than any other country in the civilized world.
And yet... In spite of all that we consider ourselves the good guys. Have you ever heard an interview with an american solider? Have you seen how they refer the enemy as bad guys and to themselves as good guys? When in fact they are the invading force? They are the source of all that violence and deaths...
So... to sum up... Are we the bad guys of the world?

It's nice to see there are some Americans that have turned their brains on. That said, it;s not enough and will never be enough. Even you I suspect would not accept the true scope of American atrocities worldwide. If you want to really understand, read up on Operation Northwoods, Iran Air 665, Operation Ajax, Operation Keelhaul, and on and on and on.
You don't become an empire by being nice and fair.
Meg: This is actually a quite interesting piece of history. Number 1, America has taken colonies just as other empires. For instance, American Samoa, Hawaii, Guam, all of the American southwest, etc. And at other times it controlled all of Cuba, Haiti, the Philippines, and many more. To this day America is an empire the same as the others. What appears different is that since international communications became available, the opportunity to control nations from afar came into being. The British started the framework for this as they would have preferred not to have sent soldiers abroad. Why send soldiers abroad when you can just threaten from home? Further, why take over governance of a nation and be responsible for it when you can simply dictate their economy to them from home? If they refuse to listen, then you send the troops in to 'remove an evil Socialist' that wants his people's wages to increase (think Nicaragua, Haiti, etc). Then lets consider the fact that the US has 180+ military bases around the world in over half the world's nations. And as much as you may want to believe it, no, no one wants America there. It's like the mafia offering "protection". Once you let them in, you can never get them out. That is the reality.
Also Meg, you don't trust any other country to have the power because it's not your country. Imagine how the rest of us feel then. Obviously I trust my country more.

I've looked at the posts before me and so far I haven't seen the Spanish/American war. If anyone starts saying stuff about it was because we wanted to help Cuba be independent from Spain I will say that the only thing that Spain did to us was take tobacco away from us which I think Is good, since tobacco is bad for everyone. Now let's get back on topic. America declared war on Spain because of someone saying Spain attacked our US ship which I think America can be the bad guy in that war. I mean they didn't have any proof that Spain did it.
Now let's talk about WWII now I know I feel mad when people always say mean stuff at Japan(which are mostly are Americans) but they totally skip the fact that America dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki which probably caused more casualties then Pearl Harbor. I won't say anything for Germany though because of the concentration camp I am sometimes afraid of Germany because I am a Jew
Now I agree that America helped in WWII .
and today America has the most shooting
and I also feel bad for Prussia and ALOT of American schools skip that the allies saw Prussia was a threat and destroyed it

I think that's true, and not because Im an arab, but for the simple reason that it's obvious that america is not trying to help the wold but to control it,if this is the kind of help that america offers to the world than we don't need it

You have gone to one extreme to the other, the right answer is in the middle. We are the third largest nation in the world and the largest rich one by far. Other nations that have been as relatively powerful as we are created empires and made colonies of other countries and killed millions trying to conqueror the world, so judged by this standard we are good. We police the world and keep the sea lanes open for trade and since we became the dominate power the fraction of people in the world living in abject poverty has been reduced by half. Which country would you trust more to have the power we do?
Note We do not have the highest murder rate.

it is truly no longer so uncomplicated as 'u.s. are the stable adult males, all of us else is undesirable'...... there is a lot greater to it than that. I delight on your patriotism yet you may do properly to examine different the flaws your government has completed to different international locations interior the previous. a great style of the time those 'undesirable adult males' are easily retaliating. as an occasion 'undesirable adult males' are killing your troops in Iraq because of the fact your government has despatched them there to illegally occupy their u . s .. i think of that could have something to do with it.

Number 1 is correct
#2 is wrong. Slavery was confined to the states in the south, and their economy was based on cotton and sugar cane. The northern economy was where the money was, due to heavy industry, and there was no slavery there. Slavery was also not only an American institution. It was also a big part of the world wide economy for many years.
#3 is also wrong. America since 1912, America did not start WW1, we did not even get involved until 1917. America also did not start WW2, we were attacked by Japan on 12-7-41, and Germany declared war on us on 12-8-41. We involved our armed forces in Koreas civil war, not for resources, but because we were asked for help in the battle against communism. We should have stayed out of it, but we did not start it. Again in Viet Nam, we involved ourselves in their civil war to stop the spread of communism. That war had began to drive out the French, long before we got involved. Then it became a civil war over communism or democracy. We sided with the south, again to stop communism, and lost. We have been involved in countless skirmishes around the world in our ongoing war on terrorism. We also did not start those wars. Kuwait and Saudi Arabia screamed for help when Saddam invaded Kuwait to take over their oil and their seaports. We answered the call for help. Saddam surrendered, and then refused to comply with his terms of surrender for 10 years, causing the 2nd Iraqi war. We never found the WMDs, but why did he not comply with the UN mandate if he did not have something up his sleeve? The war on terror has led us to Afghanistan, and the Taliban. Are they the good guys? Terrorists have been killing us around the world since the 70s. When they attacked us on our own soil twice, something had to be done. What do you think would have been the answer? Let them continue to hit us here at home?
#5 Many Americans do regard themselves as good Christians, and they also want to be able to keep that American liberty safe. If our enemies want safety from Americans, the answer is simple, don't attack us, and we will leave you in peace. Wanting safety for yourself and your children in our own country in not an unchristian value.
#6, I don't know where you got your info on numbers of murders around the world but I also know there is probably alot of evidence to the contrary. Look at Mexico with the cartels running amok, look at sunni vs shia bombers in the middle east.
Name 1 country that we invaded and stole their resources. The whole catch phrase of "no blood for oil" was and is nothing more than BS. We never got even 1 barrel of free oil in our fights against terrorism. I think your points are nearly all wrong, and that your sort of logic would leave us vulnerable to more attacks here at home

If you check out the history of most countries you will realize people are messed up. Not just America but every country.

Without the US, Japan would have conquered Asia, slaughtering millions. Without the US, Britain and France as well as the rest of Europe and probably the USSR would have fallen to the Nazis. We are the bad guy?
