Catholics: The Church has a service for exorcising demons out of people. What is your take?

I have a roommate who is Catholic and believes that the church is right to practice exorcisms because he believes that demons are real. I explained to him that even the church is easing out of exorcisms in favor of mental health science and psyciatric help. It seems to me that if demons were real, then possessions would be prime news stories anywhere. CNN, FOX, MSNBC, they love the bad news stories, and what could be worse news than demonic possession? Yet they never show up in the news and for the most part is a fear of conspiracy theorists, etc. Can anyone make it clearer to me?

The Catholic Church still practices the rite of exorcism. Each Catholic Diocese has one Priest who is the official exorcist for that Diocese. (A Diocese is a defined region much like how a state or city is governing over a certain area) Only a handful of people know whom the Exorcist is in any Diocese at any time. The reason for all the mystery and quietness around this rite is because demons are very dangerous and the Church really doesn't want people intentionally messing with them. When there is a case of a potential possession the Diocese is contacted and the Diocese investigates the case. Normally it is determined that it is a psychiatric thing but if it is determined that it is a demon possession the exorcist is called in and the exorcism is performed. Exorcisms are kept quiet firstly out of respect for the privacy of the individuals involved and because as stated above demons are dangerous. After the exorcism people return to their normal lives and usually a new Priest is appointed the exorcist because usually a Priest never wants to perform another one after the first time. The Catholic church is the only Christian church that still officially recognizes the rite of exorcism. However there are a Bishops that don't really take demon possession seriously so when that is the case people must be persistent on seeking an exorcism evaluation. The Vatican requires an exorcist in every Diocese so there is one even if the Bishop is not as believing.

<<Catholics: The Church has a service for exorcising demons out of people. What is your take?>>

What do you mean, what is "my take"?

    <<I have a <snip> demons are real.>>

    He's right. Demons are Real.

    <<I explained to <snip> and psyciatric help.>>

WRONG! It's not that the Church is "easing off" of exorcisms. Many people come to the Church, claiming to be possessed when they are, in fact, suffering from sort of mental illness. People suffering from mental health issues DON'T need an exrocism. They need psychiatric help.

Demon possession, though REAL, is also RARE. There are far more people suffering from mental health disorders than bonafide demon possession.

    <<It seems to <snip> clearer to me?>>

And that is why you don't work in television journalism!

I don't think you appreciate what demon possession is, or why it is.

I mean, think about it - "Media circus" is the best you can come up with? Seriously?

Perhaps you watch too much television?

It has always been the policy of the Church to seek medical advice before exorcism. Exorcism is the last resort.

We are not "easing out" at all. Sirach tells us to respect the physician, and we do. But there are ailments that he cannot cure.

And no, demons are not prime time news, they are not like the 70's movie "Exorcist" demons.

EDIT: Any torture of possessed people is blatantly against Church teaching. It is not a matter for the laity to deal with at all, those people in France or whatever that article says, are not Catholics.

The exorcism of emily rose was a based on true story movie, which done by the church.

I personally believe there are things like demons, and yes, that the church practice the exorcism of those demons.

And you ask why don't they exist in CNN or something? Because supernatural thing are jokes for most people, and it's not the most popular thing to believe.

But there are things which are beyond natural, and I know that the devil are behind it.

exorcisms are conducted when mental health reasons are ruled out. Minor exorcisms such as house blessings (or how I had my new car blessed) are commonplace.

Any cleric who proposes an exorcism without an examination to rule out physical or mental illness is irresponsible.

    Uk.news today.

A girl and her fiance, locked up her brother who was visiting from france, and systematically tortured him.and several others, because they thought he was posessed, carrying out.witchcraft and sourcery.

he confessed to it in the hope they would stop, bit they kept torturing him, so he told them he said he wanted to die, so they drowned him.

This goes on quite a bit in africa too.

Superstition, whilst useful to some, is very dangerous to others.
