Catholics: The Church has a service for exorcising demons out of people. What is your take?
I have a roommate who is Catholic and believes that the church is right to practice exorcisms because he believes that demons are real. I explained to him that even the church is easing out of exorcisms in favor of mental health science and psyciatric help. It seems to me that if demons were real, then possessions would be prime news stories anywhere. CNN, FOX, MSNBC, they love the bad news stories, and what could be worse news than demonic possession? Yet they never show up in the news and for the most part is a fear of conspiracy theorists, etc. Can anyone make it clearer to me?

His state had a job growth less than Obama's when he was governor and Mitt wasn't governor during a recession.
1 AnswerCivic Participation10 years agoDo you think if Joeseph McCarthy rose from the dead that he could be the GOP nominee?
He could be tough on Communists again, like Obama, half of congress and 4 out of the 9 justices on the Supreme Court. Plus he could disregard individual liberties and ruin liberals' careers again. It would be awesome

They pay more in taxes, but they make more money, their middle class is larger, they get free healthcare and higher education. Why are we afraid of a system that actually works better?

In a natural state would humans be more prone to conflict? What is civilization's impact on humans' tendency toward war, is civilization the cause of war or a solution? It's a deep question and I'd like good arguments on both sides if possible. :)

I think this is a good question and I want some good, well-backed answers. There is no correct answer, but the best answer will go to the one that has the best argument.
18 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoAn electromagnet problem with Teslas. Please help me figure it out?
In 1979, a potential difference of about 32 MV was measured in a lab in Tenn. The maximum magnetic fields, obtained for very brief periods of time, had magnetudes around 1000 T. Suppose a coil with exactly 50 turns of wire and a cross sectional area of .004 meters squared is placed perpendicular to one of these magnetic fields, which quickly drops to zero. If the induced emf is 32 MV, in how much time does the magnetic field strength decrease from 1000 to 0 T?

Consider a transformer that transmits 24 MW of power. The primary has 5600 turns, the secondary has 240. If the secondary potential difference is 4.1 kV, what is the primary difference?

The pressure increases by 10000 N/m squared for every meter of depth beneath the surface of the ocean. At what depth does the volume of a pyrex glass cube, .001m on an edge at the surface of the ocean surface, decreases by 1x10 to the negative tenth meters cubed? Assume the Bulk modulus to be 2.6x10 to the tenth N/m squared for pyrex glass.

A rotating door is made from 4 glass panes. The mass of each pane is 85 kg. The distance from the axis of rotation to the outer edge is 1.2 m. A person pushes the outer edge of one pane with 68 N of force. (perpendicular to the plane) What is the door's angular acceleration rate?
1 AnswerPhysics1 decade agoAm I a date-able guy?
I'm a 17 year old senior in high school, I've had a few relationships over the years, but nothing with real staying power, and I can't seem to figure it out. I'm a skinny kid with a big nose, but I've never been called ugly, and a lot of girls tell me that I'm relatively attractive. But I'm not like most high school guys, I'm a bit of a romantic, I'm the kind of guy who likes to kick off his shoes with a girl and go walking through the grass with a girl in the middle of the night. I'm the kind of guy who likes to stare at the stars and compare their splendor to the beauty of the girl next to me. But in high school I have never found a girl that likes that romantic stuff. From what I've told you do you think I'm hopeless?
