Looking to buy a 1992 FORD F250 7.5 460 V8 4x4 extra cab truck. Is this a good reliable truck?
I've always wanted to buy a reliable truck for some time now and was able to find a great deal for $2200 locally. My main purpose for this truck will be for occasional homedepot hauling use, and a trip to the snow mountain every now and then. I've heard many stories about how great this truck can be but I've also heard some bad stories in regards to some mechanical issues. I was told this truck is extremely horrible on gas mileage. Since this will be my occasional use truck, gas mileage is my least concern! My main concern is if this truck would break down a lot and if it's expensive to fix since everything is so "BIG" on this truck. Is this a wrong perception? Is this a reliable truck? Please help me, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If I was you, i'd buy a Haynes repair manual for that truck series. You won't have to know how to do overhauls or tranny rebuilds, but if you knew how to do tuneups and brake jobs and other odds and ends and had an OBD1 code reader, you'd probably be one up.
NEVER "flush" the transmission Period.

I personally wouldn't buy it but if you are only driving a few miles a day and if you leave the motor stock(no chip, nothing) then you should be just fine. The problems that most people talk about is when they try to get more power and the motor just wasnt designed for all these aftermarket accessories. If it were me I'd still do all the reccommended upgrades for the motor even if I didn't put a chip in it or anything. Take that $12,500 and go buy an older Super Duty with the 7.3L and you will not be let down, EVER! I'd buy a 99-03 Super Duty with the 7.3L even if it had 500,000 thousand miles if I could get the history on how it was driven, where it was driven and all that.

They are gas guzzlers because of the HUGE engine displacement and from gear ratios. THey were designed to move entire buildings with ease. It's MORE truck than you really need. THink of an engine as a set of lungs. A 460 cubic inch engine is like the lungs of a GIANT. IT inhales more aire and fuel because of the size!!! A 302 would be adequate. As far as reliability, hardly ANYTHING is better than a Ford v8 engine. They continue to get better and better every year. Use ONLY mobil one 0W-30 engine oil, which protects engine bearings and will give you the MOST power and Economy while protecting engine from bearing damage in COLDEST weather. Change it ONCE A YEAR! KEEP your THROTTLE BODY and IAC (idle air control)valve SHOWROOM CLEAN ALWAYS. Learn HOW to clean them and keep them that way. These are the HEART of your fuel metering system and will make or break you for economy and power. A dirty IAC vavle will CAUSE converter and oxygen sensor failure. WASTED MONEY and PREVENTABLE by keeping this valve CLEAN as a BEAN!!! POwer wash the engine, especailly the space between the radiator and the A/C condenser. Bug bodies and debris like leaves and paper collect here and reduce proper cooling air flow. FLUSH AND FILL your cooling system with FOrd YELLOW coolant. NO after market auto parts store JUNK!!! This coolant is for REAL and will last for 150,000 miles. It is a European base coolant formula used for DECADES by mercedes Benz. Last step>> Install a set of Bosch Fusion spark plugs. These chemically react with fuel and give you the most power and economy and lowest emissions around. Flush and fill your tranny at the FORD dealer and get a warranty, they run specials on this service. GOOD LUCK!!
