I contacted the MPBW , (Ministry of Public Blunders and Wonders ) who have informed me that it was forward planning , The Minister responsible for Public Works at the time of construction . insisted on the building of the main road because he could foresee Stonehenge becoming a tourist attraction . Also the road to Warminister was built at the same time so people could flock there to observe UFO`s

Now who says bureaucrats never get it right , all those years ago unemployment was just as bad as it is today , to get the economy moving the ancient Brits invested in the infrastructure , we could do with the same foresight today

The two roads that run alongside the monument postdate it. However, the a303 roughly follows the prehistoric track known as the Harroway. The smaller road is probably 1700's and actually cuts straight through the sacred avenue that attaches the stones to west Amesbury henge and the River Avon. Hopefully this road is soon to be closed and the avenue restored.

If this is meant as some joke then it's extremely poor. Stonehenge existed long before the modern road that goes past it did. The Roman's set up a camp near to Stonehenge and it was already ancient when they arrived in the area.

The correct question is why did they build the road so close to stonehenge since stonehenge was build severel houndred (if not thousend) years before the road. Johan.
