Can my dog do agility?
I have a yorkie/pom mix and I've considered doing agility with him, but I'm afraid he might be too small to compete. He only weighs about 5.5lbs. He's not underweight or anything, he's just super small. Is he too small to compete in agility?

Any dog of any breed or mix can do agility. Yes, even tiny toy dogs. There are lots of Chihuahua's, Yorkies and other small breeds out and doing quite well. Whether the dog enjoys agility will really be up to you and your trainer.
The height of the jump gets adjusted for the size of the dog. So depending on the height of your dog, he may jump 8 inches or maybe even 4 inches. Don't worry about that.
Find yourself a good agility club and get started. You'd be surprised at how fast those little guys can be. Forget about trying to do it youself, by getting an instructor you'll learn the correct way and your dog will have fun and won't get hurt and you won't learn any bad habits.
Here ya go:
edit: Am3, if you don't know, simply don't answer the question. Of course the jumps are lowered...DUH!

Sure you could try Agility with your toy dog. In Agility the dogs jump different height jumps depending on their height at the withers. The AFrame height & Table height also changes. The small dogs compete against the other small dogs in their jump height, while the medium & large dogs compete with the dogs their size in their jump height. There is even a whole Agility organization just for small dogs, under 17", Teacup Agility. Here all of the Agility equipment is smaller than the regulation Agility equipment in other venues. The best way to start Agility is look for a beginners class with a good instructor. One that has competed with small/toy dogs would be optimal for your situation as training, handling & running a very small dog is quite different than say running a Border Collie. Good Luck to you.

canines agility is a team game. A handler & a canines. So the canines's that do ultimate at agility are the canines's that tournament their handler's skills properly & then they make a powerful team. A handler that would not have the journey or actual features shouldn't verify properly with an extremely extreme stress, great quickly Border Collie or an extremely extreme stress Aussie. That handler could basically finally end up pissed off & not taking area in the sport. As a beginner interior the sport, look for a valid, trainable canines that has some play stress. Any breed or blended breed can in good shape this description. So get a canines you will celebrate with preparation & fidgeting with. yet one which you will actually celebrate with residing with, in the previous, throughout & after it somewhat is aggressive years. there is in no way any assure that any canines of any breed will "love" agility. So %. a canines which you would be pleased with as a puppy no remember what happens.

Every dog can compete in agility, so there is no worry about that. Whether your dog will want to or not is a different story. But I've heard good things about agility. It will be a fun way to get closer to your dog.

One of the reason why they used to be named 'toy' dogs is because there is no use for them. They are not good at anything except being pretty.
Sure, any dog can compete in agility, but they don't lower the jumps just for little dogs and lets face facts: he doesn't have wings. Maybe if you are really certain he will enjoy it, look for a special small-sized agility class - you sometimes see them in dog motel/kennels. Maybe you could start a group if you can't find one. You should be able to set up a suitably sized course in any back yard.
