When did you stop using a baby monitor?
Just out of curiosity, how old was your little one when you no longer felt the need for a monitor? My daughter's room is all the way across the house, so I know we'll need one for quite a bit longer! :)

Mine is 22 months and I just put it away. The last few months Ive mainly been using it while I'm in the shower but were totally done now.
My daughters room is right beside ours, we share a wall, leave the door open and still used a monitor lol. I'm not even a heavy sleeper, but when your exhausted there's a big difference between a small cry from the bedroom and a loud wail from the monitor beside your head! Plus, the monitor would pick up the noise of her rustling around, so it would tick us off for her waking up soon or being in a lot of discomfort.
She is at the point now, that if she wakes up at night, she hops out of her bed, walks over to my side and wakes me up. We put a gate t the hallway just in case but she's never fiddled with it at night.

We never needed one. I live in a 3 bedroom ranch house and the bedrooms are right next to each other and we always slept with the doors open and I sleep light. Since your bedrooms are spaced apart I think having a baby monitor until he is 3 might be a good idea (a lot of toddlers sleep walk) unless you can move him closer to your room.
