What kind of jewelry is used the first time you get your ears pierced (without a piercing gun)?

I want to get my ears pierced, and the first thing I'm wondering is how much that would cost at like a tattoo place with a needle, not at Claire's or somewhere like that where they use a gun which is apparently bad for your ears and increases the likelihood of getting an infection. So yeah my second question is what type of jewelry would be used for the initial piercing? Would it have to be a stud or could it be like little rings; what are my options? Basically I want it to look more edgy, I don't want two little crystals lol.

You really should use a post earring, one with a small circumference too so it won't hurt as much.
