I don't listen to a lot of folk but most of what I do listen to is from the '90s on up to now. My favorite is Red House Painters, as well as Mark Kozelek's solo career and his other band Sun Kil Moon. I also really like Mumford & Sons, Sarah McLachlan, Mazzy Star, and The Fray. Some of the early stuff from Coldplay, Snow Patrol, and The Cranberries could be considered folk and I like their stuff too. There's too many good songs to name but my favorite folk album might be "Songs For A Blue Guitar" by Red House Painters.

I am intimidated by the other answers, particularly Dave lol XD

Sooo I'll just skip to the BQ4: Master of Puppets eats The Number of the Beast's babies anyday, and that's coming from a Maiden nut at that!!

The Beast boasts my favourite Maiden track "Hallowed Be Thy Name" but beyond that and a couple of classics most of the song are utterly lackluster. Master of Puppets is not void of "classics" and ALL the songs on that album are great.

So while the Beast doesn't crack my top 5 Maiden albums, MOP is my fave metal record ever. Maiden is my fave band and Metallica is second so that ought ta tell ya something right? ^^

    Albums:

    Doc Watson - Doc Watson

Roscoe Holcomb - The High Lonesome Sound

Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

Fred Neil - Bleeker & MacDougal

Tim Hardin - Tim Hardin I or Tim Harden 2

Dave Van Ronk - Dave Van Ronk & the Hudson Dusters (this is a cheat; it is the only "rock" album by this folksinger)

Richard & Mimi Farina - Celebrations for a Grey Day

Buffy St. Marie - It's My Way!

Al Stewart - Love Chronicles (more folk-rock, than folk)

    Fairport Convention - Unhalfbricking (ditto)

Honorable mention: Donovan, who I am not comfortable tagging as "folk"

    Main Answer 2:

Skandinavia and Finland, but also the Baltic countries such as Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania is rich with Folk bands and even Folk Metal bands. I just discovered the music from these countries and they are special. Especially, Skandinavian folk is very adaptable. It can be included into Extreme Metal music without turning the songs too cheesy. The melodies are beautiful.

I also like Celtic Folk and Folk Metal from the British Islands, Bretonia, or Nova Scotia (Canada).

Other countries are Spain, Portugal, all the South American countries. Mongolia has beautiful folk music. If you get used to their sound, you would like it very much.

South East Asian music is very nice, especially Malay, Javanese, and Sundanese Music. My wife is from Indonesia.

From Central Europe, I like Medieval Minnesang. I think minnesang "Courtly Love music" from the high middle ages are better than the contemporary folk music of for example Germany or France.

    Bonus Answer 1:

Yes, I like folk metal. My favorite bands are Arkona, Cruachan, Leaves' Eyes, Midnattsol, TYR, Vintersorg, and Highland Glory.

    Bonus Answer 2:

Kari Rueslatten - Hor Min Sang

    Bonus Answer 3:

    Potato

    Bonus Answer 4:

What would be the Master of Puppets without the Beast?
