How can I keep my 2 year old fig trea healthy?

Every year we get grasshoppers and insects eating the leaves and sometimes even the figs. I don't like to spray with poisons, but like to find a natural effective remedy, can you help?

Grasshoppers are *&^%$!!!!! You can't spray them away since they migrate. Yes, maybe a hot pepper dusting or spray would work.......but I'd also consider a polypropylene cover like floating row cover : http://www.gardensalive.com/search.asp?ss=floating...

These covers can be placed over the plant and kept all season. I make frames......often from tomato cages... secure the fabric around the sides and folded over the top....(actually I've found sewing them...sloppy big basting stitches ...works the best for holding them together plus I can incorporate the frame into the sewing as well). I keep the plants inside this cocoon all season if necessary when we have a bad hopper season. Enough light passes through the fabric.

The above company also sells "Surround" which is touted to reduce grasshopper damage: http://www.gardensalive.com/product.asp?pn=8072

Also read Whitney's article on grasshoppers....especially the control. Baits are used away from the plant.....some do contain pesticides.

Also read about NOLO bait......I don't know if it's still around. You spread this out in the fields were the hoppers are coming from early season when they insects are still young. Hopefully they eat the bait before they get to your plants.

I find Hot Pepper Wax spray helpful for many chewing insects. But I'd cover the figs (if any) when you spray, or you'll give yourself hotmouth when you eat them.
