What is a lung drain and how do they do it!?

I went to the doctor today and they transferred me right into the hospital I have a bad case of pneumonia. They made me get a chest x-ray and said I will be having a lung drain this afternoon...

I dont know what it is but im very nervous I dont like hospitals! How is the lung drain done? Will they put me to sleep? When can I leave the hospital?

Update:

Thanks everyone im feeling a little better about it now. Im still pretty nervous my lung drain has been moved to 10:00 ... great

It sounds like you have a pleural effusion, which is when there is a lot of fluid concentrated in a specific area of the lung. They can drain it through a needle that is passed through the side of the ribcage. You'll be able to breathe better, and you'll probably feel better within a few hours.

Yes, absolutely they numb you up! But you are awake during the procedure. Don't worry, you'll be fine.

You'll probably be in the hospital for a few days for IV antibiotics and Nebulizer treatments, until your pneumonia clears.

There is no actual drain to the lungs. The doctor has to use a tap with a nozzle kind of like you see when they tap a maple tree for sap. You are right ammonia is very irritating to the lungs and can cause serious problems. Also it would probably be a good idea to rountinely drain the lungs but it is very expensive especially for white trash southerners. My prayers are with Buford, good luck.

I'm not sure if they put you to sleep but I have heartd they take a long needle and go between your ribs and drain fluid off it.

It is normal to be nervous. The doctors will treat you for any pain or discomfort you might have. If you are feeling something which hurts, all you need to do is let them know. They are there to help you.
