American hairstylist wanting to live in the UK?
I live in Ilinois, and want a big change. Where in the UK can I support myself and have some leftover for a life? I plan on being a live-in nanny for at least a year, then seeking a job as a hair colorist/cutter.
Any ideas or opinions would be greatly appreciated :) thank you.
Thank you everyone for all your answers :)

As an American you can only come to work in the UK...or any other part of the EU if you are educated to a minimum of a Master's Degree or you have a skill that is in high demand here. Unfortunately hairdressing does not qualify as being a high demand career...
If you really want a change then have a look at New Zealand or Australia where hairdressers are actually required...

I'm sorry, but you are not coming over here without at least a Masters Degree in a needed subject. If you don't have that then there is no chance of you living in the UK. You see, there are 30 million unemployed Europeans and you need to have skills that outdo all of those people to get in. Not very likely I'm afraid.
However, if by whatever miracle you do get over here, you won't be able to live in any big cities, you will most likely need to live in a rural area. Most big cities, especially London, are extremely expensive.

Currently, not a snowball in hells chance of a work permit. When your Mr Obama allows minimally skilled immigrants to the USA will the UK open the doors, but in the foreseeable future it's not going to happen.

If you're on a tight budget don't decide to move down south, I live in the south and almost everything in the midlands/up north is much cheaper. If I were you i'd stay in America, you could become a hairdresser there. It's not as simple as just moving to England, you need to meet all of the requirements to move to the UK, you need a work permit, visa etc. I don't know how old you are but I'd really think about making such a big move. Wish you all the best :)

It's unlikely that you would be able to immigrate to the UK. Non-EU immigration caps have been severely tightened and it's now difficult to live here if you are a citizen of any country apart from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northen Ireland itself or any other EU country.

You could support yourself anywhere in the UK being a hairstylist, but I guess the more people the more chance of finding work
England - London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle etc
Scotland - Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee etc
