The pilgrims didn't flee Religious persecution did they?

I see people typing that all the time on here, that the pilgrims left Britain to flee religious persecution.

I assume it was Americans who type that because as an Englishman Ive always been taught the exact opposite...that they left Britain so that they would be free TO persecute people because of their religious beliefs...and I know for a fact that they had some ridiculously strict laws about religion and some very severe punishments for going against what the Church said.

I know people in Britain have done that sort of thing all through our history...but I thought we were kinda over the worst of it by then.

    You are mostly right.

Following the establishment of the Church of England, a vacuum of religious instruction and leadership existed. With no longer any clear path from Rome on how the church should operate many in the clergy deviated significantly from the Catholic practices. In its most extreme form this became Puritanism. Puritans fanatically opposed anything that reminded them of the old church, but for the majority of practitioners little changed - catholic ways were simply continued in the new church.

During the reign of Elizabeth 1, the puritans gained significant influence and upon the rise to the thrown of James 1 they sought to establish this influence with the Milenary Petition that demanded the King outlaw all former catholic practices. When James rejected the petition some left Britain to form their own colony in which religious diversity would not be tolerated (look what they did to the quakers).

But you are wrong in believing that the days of religious persecution were over in England. The worst was yet to come. The Puritans that remained took control of the country after the English Civil War and under Cromwell persecuted catholics and other devotees unmercifully.

The Pilgrims left Britain (some of course stayed at home) because it was to liberal for them. They weren't persecuted on any great scale only disliked for their pious, humourless, patronising judgemental nature. Would you put up with them after a hard days physical labour, when all you want is to sit back see the kids & have a pint of Ale?

It's ironic how people say that yet the US is so much, much more religious now than the countries that these people fled from. Like here in the UK, religious people are quite scarce yet now in the US there is a ridiculous amount of religious Christians especially fundies.

If they did move so they could get away from the religious back then well then they didn't do very well.

They were excluded from some things becuse they were not Anglicans and in any case the Stuart monarchy was turning more Catholic at the time,, so they feared for the future.

They first went to Holland where they thought they would have less "persecution" but it was actually worse there than in England.

So after they got to America they started doing their own persecuting.

    no never, just torture

some believe by torturing you can force another to say what appeases them, its why they think muslims do the same thing religiously, so who is worse, islam preaching a koran or Christians torturing people to believe in sweet peace loving jesus who died for their sins?

Those who suppress the truth of history (such as yourself apparently) are destined to repeat it.
