Why India makes Taj Mahal it's identity Icon?
Why give this perverted sultan Shah Jahan (1628-58, Akbar’s grandson) who made the condition of Hindu peasants became unbearable—adults and children were enslaved to pay taxes (Khan p 283-4). Yet you will read of this as the Mughal period’s greatest prosperity—while non-Muslim Indians were reduced to destitution. Shah Jahan’s religious violence; destruction of Hindu and Christian sites; offer of death or Islam to 4,000 at Agra while young females were sent to harems; slaughter of 10,000 at Hugh and INCEST with his daughters is reported in part K and Trifkovic p 112. Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal to his 3rd wife who died bearing her 14th child in 19 years! (What a romantic Son of a ***** & donkey)
Slaves from foreign nations also flowed into India – purchased Tatar and Uzbek women as harem guards (war-like) and European women as sex–slaves .(Khan 317
The Islamic historians and scholars have recorded with utmost glee and pride of the slaughters of Hindus, forced conversions, abduction of Hindu women and children to slave-markets, and the destruction of temples carried out by the warriors of Islam during 800AD to 1700 AD. Millions of Hindus were converted to Islam by the sword in this period”

Well history and actions of emperor apart, Taj is seen as symbol of eternal love and was one of the wonders in the world, it's architectural as well as spiritual qualities that makes it one of the wonders of the world, hence large number of tourist came to India to visit Taj , so to encourage tourism taj is treated as Incredible India's icon. But as more tourist are coming they are becoming familiar with Indian culture and traditions and feel that only Taj is not sole attraction of a country where taste, traditions and languages change rapidly. So a single monument can not be treated as "identity" icon in modern scenario. it was past.

Of course what you've have said's absolute truth, but how much important's it today? Taj Mahal's a good marketing strategy than any other thing because its one of the wonders of the world and it attracts a lot of tourists every year to India. So today as everything's commercialized, who cares? Everyone wants their needs and also greeds to be fulfilled.

In India,we honour every religion(post independence). We are different from our ex-rulers in many ways.Giving credit to the good deeds of those people help us in forgetting( to some extent) their misdeeds.
