Is the title of a story copywrighted?
If I wrote a story and was trying to get it published and discovered a novel of the same title already existed could I use my original title or would I have to change it?

The Dude is right. Titles cannot be coptrighted. You may observe that many titles are taken from lines of classic literature. The bible, Shakespeare, fairy tales and such are all rich sources of titles and themes. For all we know, that other book's title may have been borrowed from somewhere else.

No. (It's spelled "copyrighted," by the way.) There are plenty of titles that have been used on multiple books. There are, for example, several books by different authors entitled "History of the United States."
