Is Tony Abbott courting popularist politics by saying he will send the Navy to turn back boats?

Turn back the boats of assylum seekers from Indonesia. Does anyone think that Tony Abbott is desperate to find ways in which to attract the votes of Australians by trying to "look tough" on something which appeals to the hysterical misconceptions which people such as himself perpetuate?

He is an idiot who reminds me of one those bubble heads and will do anything to discredit the PM.

He is just going to antagonise the Indonesian government when he should have gone with the Malaysian solution.

    Reasons are:

    1. wants to gain votes from swinging voters. Remember, it's not the majority's opinion that counts, but the voters of these few electoral hotspots, whereby their votes could essentially win or lose a majority in parliament. I'm not exactly sure which electorate, but I'm guessing conservative Qld ones

    2. he wants to make the ALP look as bad as possible. Considering the Labor method of dealing with refugees fail like no sh*t, Abbott wants to introduce some other plan that would seemingly be better, and as he vowed to never reintroduce Nauru again (which was quite stupid in my opinion as Nauru recently signed the refugee thing>< and John Howard is probably rolling in his grave over this) his only option is to readopt Howard's Australian iron curtain method by driving them off, and thus, never having to deal with them on Australian soil ever again...

    3. he justs wants to sound like he has the ultimate power to control the Australian forces... show off...

I personally think Abbott is an arrogant git who wants to drag Australia back to the 50s but considering the other alternative is an indecisive incompetent red-headed puppet, maybe I'll just go with him...
