Is it true that there is a curfew on cats in some parts of New Zealand?

Somebody told a friend of a friend of a cat I know, that in some towns in NZ there is a ban on cats going out at night.

Someone else I know who has a grey and white cat in Wellington said that this might perhaps, if it's true, be because cats have made a huge impact on the number of native birds (many being flightless of course) on account of them being NBKs (natural born killers).

I am curious to know if this true (if there is a curfew) because I don't think that cats are entirely to blame for the demise of native NZ birds.

    Not in Hamilton!

  • It is true, and about time, it should be country wide. In most of Australia there are curfews on cats, due to them becoming feral and wiping out a lot of the indigenous wildlife. Cats are the worst introduced species as far as killing off native wildlife, even worse than foxes.

They should never be allowed near native forests, with or without bells.

I know that if you live in a national park, cats have to have bells on them so they scare off prey before they get to it. Some other areas close to where they have endangered species might also have a similar kind of thing. Don'r know.

LOL no, I don't know where that originated from, the only place cats aren't allowed is forests, but I highly doubt that anyone would take their cat there...

Lol don't know about this, but if it happens in some parts of NZ. Tauranga is not one of them. If it's true then it's plain silly
