go to hospital or go the hospital?

well I'm non native speaker of english

and us non native speakers learn that

when ur a patient : [you go to hospital]

wheu ur visiting a patient : [go to the hospital]

when ur a student: [you go to school, college]

when ur going to do anything except study: [you go to the school, college]

when ur going to pray: [you go to church]

when ur going to do anything except pray: [you go to the church]

some native speakers have told me that they haven't learn that like this.

so are books for non native speakers wrong or what ?

clear it up for me please

thank you very much!!!

my boyfriend is a non native english teacher

and he disagrees with any native speakers

we can say he follows grammar rule strictly

I see your asking this question from Yahoo Answers U.K. so I'm assuming your from the U.K. I can only tell you how to say something from an American English grammatical perspective. British English may be different.

I doesn't matter why your going to the hospital or what you will be doing there. All that matters is your going there. So you would say I'm going to the hospital to visit a friend in need. Or you could say I'm going to the hospital to get better. Again, what your doing their or why your their doesn't matter, it only matters that your there or going there.

This same process applies to your other sentences.

I'm going to college to study History.

I'm going to college to avoid the real world for four more years.

I like to go to church on Sunday to pray.

On Friday I'm going to church to attend their annual picnic.

Yes, this is basically right, I'd say (as a native English speaker).

We don't actually learn it that way, as you just kind of pick it up as you go along, so if you ask most native speakers they would have to stop and think about it for a while to establish whether the rule is correct (I did, anyway).

Yes the rule is correct because if you're a student and you say 'I'm going to college today', you don't just mean that you are visiting THE building, but also that you are taking part in the broader thing of being educated.

The word 'the' is used to focus attention on one specific thing or place, rather than a general concept. For example, if I hurt myself I want to go to hospital- I don't care which one. But once I'm laying in bed at a particular hospital, my parents will come and visit me at THE hospital- the word 'the' being used to make the sentence refer to a specific hospital, rather than just any hospital anywhere.

    Hope that makes sense...

EDIT I really don't agree with all the others who are saying that you say 'go to the hospital'. I mean, obviously lots of people say this, but I don't think that it's technically 'correct', maybe in the US but not here in England.

In America, this is reversed. You go to THE hospital, and you go to school. But this is what we call a convention - everyone speaks this way, but because there are so many people from other countries, if we can understand you, that's what counts most!

Now - let's work on your spelling.

All sentences begin with capital letters.

    It's "your" or "you're" - not "ur."

    "English" is always capitalized.

Watch your plurals. Someone either follows A grammar rule, or grammar RULES.

Last but not least: Your boyfriend may teach English, but he cannot possibly know all the different rules in all the different countries where people speak English. If he thinks he does, send him to America and watch his world turn upside-down! :)

I the United States we say "go to the hospital" even when we are the patient! The others are correct though. Also, we go to "the university" when we are students, not "go to university" which I read is said in the UK and other English-English places! That makes no sense, since we "go to college," but "go to the university!"
