Christians, was Jesus trying to warn us of a particular danger in these Bible verses?
Luke 21:8-9: And he said, "See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am [he]!' and, 'The time is at hand!' Do not go after them. And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end will not be at once."
I checked a Greek interlinear, and the "he" in brackets was added to the text for clarification. It literally reads, "many will come in my name, saying, 'I am!'"
I previously thought this was a general warning to beware of false messiahs and false prophets until I noticed the Greek construction. THEN I read Matthew Henry’s Commentary:
"IV. With what clearness and fulness Christ answers their enquiries, as far as was necessary to direct them in their duty; for all knowledge is desirable as far as it is in order to practice.
1. They must expect to hear of false Christs and false prophets appearing, and false prophecies given out (v. 8): Many shall come in my name; he does not mean in the name of Jesus, though there were some deceivers who pretended commissions from him, but usurping the title and character of the Messiah. Many pretended to be the deliverers of the Jewish church and nation from the Romans, and to fix the time when the deliverance should be wrought, by which multitudes were drawn into a snare, to their ruin. They shall say, hoti egoµ eimi—I am he, or I am, as if they would assume that incommunicable name of God, by which he made himself known when he came to deliver Israel out of Egypt, I am; and, to encourage people to follow them, they added, 'The time draws near when the kingdom shall be restored to Israel, and all who will follow me shall share in it.'"
Bear in mind that this was originally written in 1706, and Henry noted that apparently there would arise those who "would assume that incommunicable name of God" in order "to encourage people to follow them."
What do you think of this? Do you know of any groups who have assumed the "incommunicable name of God" (based on the "Tetragrammaton") to draw in followers?
Dan, please check your link. I'm not sure it's bringing up what you meant for it to.
Kawika, I assume you're in a group that goes by God's name. Please consider Jesus' warning and do some research. All you need is the Bible. Read a few chapters like John, Romans and Hebrews and make sure you're not being led astray.
Kawika, I have not given you a thumbs down. I worship the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I would be happy to email with you about this. When you say you have studied the Bible, do you mean the actual Bible itself, or do you mean publications that give you a certain group's interpretation of the Bible, directing you to various Scriptures here and there to prove their point?
Kawika, I'm wondering if we have a language barrier, because I didn't mention Bible translations at all. In fact, I have several copies of the NWT, and there are parts of it I enjoy very much. For instance, would it be possible for Jehovah to manifest himself as three-in-one if he so chose? Read Gen. 18:1 through Gen. 19:24. Mark every time you see the word "Jehovah" AND the pronouns that are related to it.
Other interesting reads include Gen. 16; Gen. 31:11-13; Ex. 3:2-7; Jdgs 3:13-23; Jdgs 6:18-21; Mal. 3:1 (compare with Mat. 11:10); also see Isa. 44:6, which is a little obscured due to the wording, but if you use all those other Bibles, you can look it up in them as well. This is not all, but it's all I'm adding to this Q, and it's a good start. If you would like to continue via email, you are welcome to contact me.
No worries, Kawika, you haven't offended me at all. Yes, I've read the verses you mentioned, and I would very much enjoy continuing this via email.

In This Passage, according to a Commentary by David Guzik "Jesus knew that many would arise more than willing to assume the role of political messiah for Israel. One striking example of this was a man named Bar Kokhba, who 100 years after Jesus was considered by many Jews to be the Messiah. He started a widespread revolution against the Romans and enjoyed early success, but was soon crushed.
These people who rejected Jesus when He came to them as Messiah ended up falling for false messiahs who led them into nothing but death and destruction. If we don’t stand on the truth, we may fall for anything."

Who provides for the people spiritually? Jesus and all those who followed him was concerned about peoples spiritual welfare. ACCORDING TO JESUS THE PEOPLE WAS LIKE SHEEP WITHOUT A SHEPHERD. What have you or your congregation done for the peoples spiritual needs? EXACTLY YOUR COMMENTS ARE OPINIONATED AND BIASED. ARE YOU THE ONE THAT JESUS PROPHESIED ABOUT THOSE SEATING ON THE SEAT OF MOSES IN MATTHEW 23:2? THERE'S MORE TO WHAT JESUS SAID IN MATTHEW 23.
@Peace lily Micah 4:5 If you haven't studied the old testament you really would have no understanding of the new testament. I have studied the bible to know that I'm not the one that's being led astray. In
fact look at your bible there's over 6000 mistakes alone replacing the tetragrammaton with Lord and God for what reason? That's why you don't know who your God. Didn't Jesus make God's name known? John 17:26 And I have made your name known to them and will make it known, in order that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in union with them. Didn't he say he that has sent me is real? So who is your God if you don't mind me asking?
@Peacelily, do you see where this is going when you ask what bible have I studied? Your a smarter then that to ask such a question. The actual bible itself? Which one the one that was written in Hebrew and Greek then translated into Latin then again in English the 16 th century with thy's and thou's and now modern English? Which translation should a person study? NIV, KING JAMES, AMERICAN STANDARD, THE LIVING BIBLE? DO YOU SEE WHERE THIS IS GOING? WHO GIVES YOU AUTHORITY TO SAY WHAT TRANSLATION SHOULD BE STUDIED AND WHAT SHOULDN't? DO YOU SEE WHERE I'M COMING FROM? I'VE READ THE BIBLE TWICE, AND THE NEW TESTAMENT MANY TIMES. DO YOU KNOW WHY YOU CAN'T USE THE OLD TESTAMENT EFFECTIVELY? BECAUSE IT DOESN'T SUPPORT THE TRINITY DOCTRINE.
@ Peacelily, By all means lets continue via email, if I have offended you in any way I do apologize.
Before I do have you read Exodus 33:20, and John 1:18? Was it really Jehovah that manifested himself as 3 in 1? Or was Jesus telling the truth at John 1:18, John 5:37, and John 4:24?

The only thing that this is: a warning and indication of the end times- the Parousia, or second coming. There will be many false prophets. There will be war. There will be disaster. There will be uncertainty. But rest assured, there will be the comfort, truth and love of the Lord Jesus Christ. WHen I studied this at Bible College, we drew to this conclusion, so it is something you can trust. I AM, though often used to declare the eternal authority of God/Jesus, is used here to show that the false prophets will act as if they have the same eternal authority, declare that they do or manipulate people into thinking so. (Take Benny Hinn for example...)

Jehovah's Witnesses have assumed the "incommunicable name of God" and they have been teaching false doctrine for over 100 years!

Forgive my Bluntness, in times such as these, it is necessary.
I have come to the same conclusion myself, regarding this primary group that has utilized the name of God to bolster themselves to the apex of positions before God, and above all other beliefs, and as many believe, they have set themselves above Christ Himself; "Jehovah's Witnesses" fit the description to a Tee in these scriptures.
They also align themselves with the scripture texts in 2nd. Thessalonians, and in Deuteronomy 18; 21-23.
"Man of Lawlessness" and "False Prophet".
The velvet glove of how they so artfully portray their "love", and the freedom they offer, is soon crushed by the iron fist of control they exercise over their members, once they have committed to this Counterfeit Christian "Organization".
Thank you for a concise, and obviously pertinent reveal of this dangerous sect.
They come in "I-Am's" name, and are misleading many.
The other "false Christ's depicted here in the other answers are but a conglomerate part of the "visible false Christ's", but the most dangerous of them all, is the one that judges all others as inferior to her....and "sets herself above everyone"...this is none other than "Jehovah's Witnesses".

Check out the first 3 videos on this page it uses Tetragrammatons for hebrew markings. I find these to be the most accurate.

I'm reminded of the story of Little Miss Muffet who sat on a tuffet eating curds and whey, when a spider sat down beside her and scared her away.
do you suppose she'd have been as frightened if it had been a cockroach instead ?
and did the spider eat the curds and whey ?
If jesus was eating at the Last Supper, and a spider sat down beside him would it have changed the whole story?
what if there were a multitude of spiders ?
Bear in mind that it was written in the 1600's and it's a fairy tale.

Excellent find peace. We can be assured that this scholar will not be featured as a rebuttal to opposers of a certain ‘people for his name’, unless the author’s words can be juxtaposed to say the exact opposite of his original intent. Smile.
‘Judge’ Joseph Franklin Rutherford was the motivating force behind the selection and implementation of the name “Jehovah’s Witnesses” the story behind this selection is of great interest to those who are giving consideration to what you have uncovered.
Between 1879 and 1931 the simple name “Bible Students” sufficed to express just who this rather new religion was and how they represented themselves. Not much controversy or even any animosity toward such a benign religious name.
The picture changed when Rutherford and seven other prominent members of the Bible Students were convicted for Sedition against the United States. After spending 9 months in jail Rutherford and his cronies were released from jail on a technicality, they were not exonerated, just released.
Thus began a saga that millions of unknowing and vulnerable followers have little or no knowledge about. Rutherford was the editor and chief of all publications and media released by the well established publishing company The Watchtower and Bible Tract Society. He had a ready made grand stand on which he could literally monopolize and control. In a period of less than 15 years this now humiliated ex-con, religious leader set out to do everything he could to get revenge against those who he considered were responsible for his imprisonment. His now famous remark upon release from jail “fight them until Hell freezes over” set the tone.
Now brash with the heat of revenge and religious fervor he literally turned the doctrinal base of the Bible Students on it’s head. He declared that birthday’s, Christmas, holidays, the cross, flag salute, military service, voting, and other traditions of mainstream Christianity as false and prohibited his membership to continue such practices.
Along with the above he started a relentless campaign against the clergy (who he blamed more than the government for his jailing). He required his followers to retrofit their own personal automobiles with loud speakers to blast his voice riding around peaceful neighborhoods. He bought and utilized radio stations to broadcast his vindictive and accusatory words. He required his followers to go from door to door with his books. Even exposing them to mob action, where many were beaten, even tarred and feathered out of town. Never once was he ever attacked or suffered an injury, like so many of his followers. More to follow......
@Part 2: The culmination of his slashing and burning every tradition and doctrine of mainstream Christianity by biblical or pagan sources was the selection of the most controversial name possible for his newly reformed religion, in 1931 he selected a name that had been invented by a Spanish catholic monk in the 13th century. That name which correct pronunciation had been lost to the ages, was chosen as the name to represent his former simple Bible Students, JEHOVAH’S Witnesses. Immediately condemning all other religions for not using that invented rendition of God’s sanctified and holy name.
He even went so far as to select a verse from Isaiah that seemed to render this NEW NAME selection some biblical backing. Later the Watchtower had to correct that miss application of scripture. Since the general public was barely familiar with this Spanish monks invented name, the Watchtower society now under the direction of a man who was mentored by the Judge himself, Nathan Knorr assuming the presidency in 1942 (after the judges death) immediately commissioned a secret panel of ‘translators’ to fix the 2000 year old omission of a name only invented some 600 years prior.
The translators of this divine name addition of the bible ‘New World Translation’ were only identified when a member of the ‘governing body’ realized he had been duped and wrote about his experiences at the very top of this religious hierarchy. His book was called Crises of Conscience. None of those translators were scholars with any foundation in the ancient bible languages they presumed to translate.
Now to legitimatize this selected I AM name Jehovah even further certain individual jw have set upon what they describe as a NEW version of the 1611 King James Bible are trying to legitimatize the chosen religious name even further. Why? Because they know that the majority of mankind recognize this name as invention a ploy of this religious cult to set themselves apart from all others. They have accomplished that for sure, but on the back of the most sacred and “incommunicable name of God”.
