Does peanut butter need to be refrigerated after it's opened?

I never do, even when the package says to (which usually is on organic peanut butters. They put this on the packaging because as it has no preservatives, putting it in the fridge will ensure it lasts a long time and that the oil does not seperate again after you stir it. However, I find that it does not seperate anyway even if you put it in the fridge, and that it stays long for months anyhow.) I would recommend not putting it in the fridge because it makes your peanut butter very tough. Whenever I refridgerate it, it ends up tearing my bread because it's too hard.

If it's a "natural" unhomogenized peanut butter, the kind where the oil floats to the top if you let it sit long enough, containing only peanuts, oil, and salt, and if you won't be eating it all in less than a couple of weeks, then you should refrigerate it. The oil will go rancid if you don't, and that gives an undesirable off taste.

If it's one of the homogenized ones like Skippy, then it's okay out of the fridge for much longer.

Normal peanut butter doesn't, but almost all organic peanut butters do because they leave out all the preservatives. Unless its organic or says to refrigerate on the package, I never do and have never had a problem.

I usually refrigerate it after opening, I'm not sure if it NEEDS to be, but it's probably a good idea.
