What kinds of books were produced in the early medieval Islamic world?

    Very few. Almost none. The only book published was the koran or anything related to it.

    It hasn't changed at all. Even today, the total printed output of a small country like The Netherlands (16 M) is much higher and of far higher quality than the total printed output of the entire mohammedan world put together (1,3 B).
