Planting a 10 gallon freshwater?

I really want to start branching out into live plants, and I have an empty ten gallon aquarium. I figure this would be a good opportunity to do so; I'd like to get an Amazon sword or two for starters and add a betta later on.

My question is this tank doesn't have a filter. I know the betta will be ok with it, but what about the plants? Do they need the filtration?

Filtration is good. it keeps the plants healthy and makes them easier to maintain. Even with a filter you should do water changes to help keep the water clean as possible. It is not true that the beta is okay without a filter infact it would make your job a lot easier. As you would not have to clean it as often as you would without a filter.

A small filter for a 10 gallon tank can be picked up at walmart for like 15 dollars.

Um, well assuming you do significant water changes each day, your betta can SURVIVE in an unfiltered tank. But of course he'd be better with filtration, which is where the plants come in.

Live plants consume nitrite and nitrate which are byproducts of ammonia, released from fish waste and urine. They are basically natural filters. And no, live aquarium plants do not need filtration.

Also, Amazon swords grow vertically to be quite tall, so you'll have to prune stems on a regular basis since you have a ten gallon tank.

Hope this answers your question... just make sure you have an aerated substrate like gravel and full spectrum or daylight lighting and the should be a ok. No need for fertilizer since you have a fish. The poop will feed the plant.

Edit: Plants don't need filtration because they don't produce waste like fish which require mechanical filtration for cleaning up the poop and biological filtration for detoxifying the chemicals.

you dont need filtration, but it would be better, swords are slow growing and a bit harder to keep than some other plants, so you could just get the cheapest filter available for that size tank, plus a filter would create water flow so dirt etc wont settle on the plants

yes the plants need a filter, they need air to live. just get something that circulates the water.
