Making welfare recipients work for their benefits...?
I understand there is a program in Germany that calls for welfare recipients to work at various public services (such as picking up trash on public roads) in order to receive benefits. Does anyone know more about these programs? I think it would be great here in the USA but know that many here would just shoot it down as being "unfair" or something like that.
Child care is not a public service. I'm talking about something that benefits the public as a whole.
People with Down's Syndrome can pick up trash..but that person with Down's isn't necessarily on public benefits. You are making assumptions. I am not.
What I am saying is that if you are going to collect a check from the taxpayers, then you should (if physically able) to perform a public service. You can call it a job if you want. I just expect *something* in return for a taxpayer funded check. The alternative is to do away with welfare altogether...but too many libs would deem that heartless or some other bleeding heart BS like that. So I'm just looking for a compromise if that is possible.

Only if they're physically and mentally able. I mean of course that the exception would be that the legally disabled would not fall under that idea. (Examples: MS patients, people with downs syndrome, etc)

Personally if they are well bodied and able I feel as if they should do some type of part time work. If they keep on receiving benefits without doing anything to get them other than standing in line to requalify, why would they want to work. I know a woman with 8 kids that get disability for all eight pulling in over 2000.00 a month. Plus child support, First months cash assistance and Food Stamps. She brings home more than some individuals do with full time jobs. The system is so crazy but if we dont ask for a change this will continue to happen. Generation after generation will keep on doing this.

I like your idea very much! There are ALWAYS things that need to be done. Street cleaning, pick up trash out of ditches and such, planting flowers to beautiful the city, etc. Bringing their children along would be an excellent learning tool for them, as well. It would probably be the only work these children would EVER seen accomplished!
@Zeester - you explemplify talking our of both sides of your face. The question was about welfare recipients and you failed to explain why they are entitled to free hand-outs. Why would you want to pay them a "fair wage" ON TOP of their hand-out? Idiot...you obviously were instantly blinded by your biased hatred and you failed to properly read and comprehend the message. You sheeple have a way of doing that.

We had one in the county in New York where I used to live
All able-bodied welfare recipients were required to work 3 days a week for 4 hours per day at various county offices stuffing and mailing envelopes, filling forms & brochures in bins for the public to use, etc.
The bottom line was that the welfare rolls dropped 30 % in 90 days.

Many states already require employment (or active attendance of school) as a condition of receiving continuing benefits. Payroll taxes go into the states' general fund, from which benefits are collectively paid out.

Because the average welfare recipient lives such a life of luxury! Why work when you can live in a studio the size of a close in a ghetto, eat Ramen and ride the bus?

That was tried here but a judge stopped it because it was "Demeaning" that people should work for their hand outs.
There was a time when taking a hand out was considered demeaning. Now the welfare class considers it a right.

So you want the government to provide jobs for people INSTEAD of the free market? Boy you guys talk outta both sides when it suits your purpose.
My thoughts: sure thing...so long as the work pays a living wage...and then they wouldn't need welfare. So yes, I do support the government creating more jobs during tough times. Great idea!

If they are able they should either be working like you suggest or getting an education so they can find work. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that.
