Can someone please explain why we still use the two-party system?
Dividing our population into two feuding tribes has done nothing but turn us against each other, and draw our government to a deadlock on almost every issue. I'd love to hear a well-reasoned, rational explanation as to why we should continue to use the antiquated Republican/Democrat dichotomy, rather than free up our leaders to think for themselves.
DRA: That's a strong point. It's a shame more people don't think that way.
Edit: Great answers all around, guys. I'm thinking I should rephrase the question more in terms of liberal vs conservative, rather than republican vs democrat.

Because having idealistic opposition is preferable to a dictatorship, especially to Americans.
Quick history lesson - we tried to have a 'no party system' when America first started. George Washington spoke about the problems of having political parties. We got them anyway. Why? Because having two or more idealistic views is too much part of human nature. We naturally have different views. The amazing thing isn't that we have more than one political party. It is that we only have 2 'big' parties.

Our elections are winner take all rather than the proportional system used in some European countries.
It takes organization and money to run for office. Once in awhile, a third party may become big enough to gain a few seats, and the structure of the two parties are not that rigid. They can split, reform, etc.
Also, just try and gain support for a bill in Congress, if there were no political parties. Certainly you don't believe that all bills are considered based on their merit!

Because enough people don't have the stones to vote for an alternative.
Case in point. If I don't vote for the GOP offering, their logic is that I am, in effect, giving the election to Obama.
I am doing no such thing. If the GOP fails to provide me with a candidate that I support, I will seek one elsewhere.
Nothing sickens me more than a winning candidate in a two-party system assuming that everyone voted * for * them. Most likely, a healthy chunk of the votes were * against * the other person.

It's less of a official system than it is a reflection of the cultural make up of the country. The alternative is a disperse group of parties with a lot more radical representation. The two party system keeps political view relatively moderate compared to other countries. What does this have to do with leaders "thinking for themselves"?

There have been third parties, even fourth. Look up president clinton he "won" because there was a third party to split the conservative vote. Two parties is not a legal requirement.
Guess what? History did not start with you. Read some so you know enough to ask a reasonable question.

It is not the two party system that has done it but the fear and hate mongers like Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, Ann Coulter, and Glenn Beck.
