What is the significance in 3 as far as fairy tales go?
My teacher said that a two ways to tell that a fairy tale is a fairy tale is by repetition of words and sounds (Three Little Pigs, Little Red Hen, or The Gingerbread Boy), and the number three. Obviously in the three pigs are there, but why should it make a difference if there is four pigs or ten pigs? Is there some kind of reason for specifically three?

Three is the number of Persons of God in the Trinity of the Christian religion and it was accordingly an appropriate number for a small group in the minds of the first tellers of the tales.
