Why do people vote with the candidate's views on abortion on their minds?

I think by now we can safely say that Republican candidates love to say they are anti-abortion, however, it's also safe to say that none of them will ever try to overturn Roe v. Wade. No Republican president has ever tried to overturn it in almost 40 years -- even with a Republican Congress.

Is this just lip service for the masses?

I don't know why. I know people who eliminate candidates solely on this issue. You would figure economic and foreign policies would be much more important factors for deciding on a candidate. By the way Ron Paul would try to overturn it but there's no way congress would let that happen.

Some have claimed they will. Polls have showed that around 70% of the country is pro choice, but they narrowed it down, and it showed that most (80 % i think it was) of Americans that classify themselves as pro choice, believe it should be legal, however, heavily restricted. legal with few restrictions, was next, and the least common view, wanted abortion on demand without any restrictions whatsoever. if so much of the country supports restrictions on abortion, its no surprise that candidates say they are anti-abortion/pro life. Also, i'd like to point out, no pro choice president has overturned the Hyde amendment, just as pro life presidents will not overturn roe vs wade.

it will take more than a republican congress to over turn that! it was ruled by the supreme court and a junction to overturn it the Dem's will block it! they can block it for as long as they want, besides that they would never allow a republican supreme court and that would be the only way it will ever be overturned! it's obvious that Dem's like to murder unborn children!

Well, as of late, they've really been making progress towards it.

All kinds of bills are being passed, they got Susan G. Komen foundation to back out of funding Planned Parenthood for cancer screenings (one of the three biggest things they do, after STD screenings and contraception.

Not to mention that whole person hood thing they tried in several states.

Really, it's terrifying. Wish more people would wake up and realize that it is a real threat and is something we need to worry about.

Clearly it is music to people's ears but it doesnt mean anything at all. The reality is that the supreme court decision will remain unchanged mostly because abortions will never to away but will go underground and take women's lives.

Politicians love to tug our heart strings. But what really matters is their dedication to our health, education and welfare. By welfare I mean that I dont want to be 89 and worried about my health rent medication and food. We work hard in our family. I want someone to take charge of our schools where we probably outspend most countries but our scores are terrible.

Dude, don't even try to pretend that it's "just lip service":

There's not much that can be done to overturn Roe v. Wade, except to pack the courts with pro-life justices and wait to bring another case to the court in the hopes they'll overturn it. (In fact, you might be interested to read this article about pro-lifers who oppose certain pro-life legislation because they think it might hurt their preferred method of outlawing abortion: http://articles.businessinsider.com/2011-11-09/pol... ).

Abortion access has been increasingly targeted for regulation and laws- it's ridiculous to try to accuse pro-life politicians of apathy or lip service when their actions speak to worsening the ability of a woman to get an abortion in our country.

They don't - it is all talk. It just sounds better to them to say they are pro-life.

There are very good reasons why most young catholic Women do not choose a catholic OB-GYN.

Most People still vote with choice on their minds. Very FEW Families have no history of an abortion.
