The name was given because at that time India was under british raj
and undivided bengal was the best state in india
and calcutta was the capital city of india
so they found Tigers in that state so they named it as bengal tiger
same reason for the sea bay of bengal.

There are more than one type of tiger even though they all belong to the same species (different subspecies). It is my understanding that the Bengal Tiger was named after the Bay of Bengal where there were and still are healthy populations. This also seems to be the region where it was most feared. Perhaps because of high population densities. If I remember correctly, the royal comes from the fact that royalty kept them as pets and they were considered a sign of royalty.
