Will working long and odd shifts drive someone insane?

Someone I know is working 8,12 and 16 hour shifts as a caregiver. They never know in advance what shift they will work, and sometimes it's for more than 7 days in a row. Sometimes she will work from 4am to 4pm, then another day work from 11am to 3am (16 hours). I don't know how someone could keep sane working like that. I was wondering what the possible symptoms of that would be.

Yes, If they want to go insane, being negative about having work or a job will eventually drive them INSANE ! Or if they choose, they can be thankful and grateful to the LORD GOD that they have work, no matter how long the hours are....I think we all know that sitting as a caregiver is not a miserable as many might wish they had again a job or any job...Many might be thrilled to even have to work strange shifts...I was recently cut $5000.00 a year of my salary , so frankly I don't need to hear someone freaking out about their hours...I only wish we had more available hours to make up for the lost revenue...

If I sound hard or uncaring, much of the reason is because I'm very disappointed in the many in the world and U.S. who are complaining about their "hard" jobs when so many are dependent on Gov't funding and unemployment funds that the country simply does not have....

I used to work hours very similar to those at a nursing home. It was very difficult and it made me very cranky and tired all the time, but I didn't experience any permanent effect that I know of and once I went back to sleeping regular hours I felt fine. Lots and lots of nurses, nursing aides and doctors work these kind of hours. Check out the Wikipedia article below on sleep deprivation if you want.
