How to tell if a Rat is happy/Healthy?

I just got two young male rats, These are my first rats and I did all my research, they have a large cage with toys and hammocks, I've had them for three days and I've noticed distinct personality differences, Finny is the bigger rat and obviously more dominant but also more active, he eats more and explores the cage more and is generally more outgoing though not as friendly (He'll let you hold him and sits on your lap but prefers to be playing), Gil is smaller, quieter and friendlier but he doesn't seem as interested in toys, he eats and drinks fine but sleeps quite a bit more than Finny and is much slower moving so I'm wondering if he's happy/healthy, Is this just because of their very different personalities that I'm noticing this or is he sick or unhappy?

if he has a good coat, is a healthy weight, breathes without sound or distress, and is alert, it's likely to just be a personality thing.

some rats are more active than others.

a good sign for happy rats is that very often when they're relaxing and happy, they'll sit grinding their teeth together. this is known as Bruxing. sometimes it makes their eyes bulge, referred to as Boggling.

Bruxing can sometimes happen when rats are stressed, but you should be able to tell the difference in the demeanor of a relaxed brux and a stressed brux.

A healthy rat should be bright and alert, with clear eyes and nose (no red stains), shiny fur and a dry nose. A sick rat will be lethargic, and may have laboured breathing and sit hunched up and be off his food.

Rats have differing personalities. Of my two, one is always out exploring and is more lively, the other prefers to lounge around, but they are both perfectly healthy.

when I read this it reminded me of my rats because they were EXACTLY the same and I think they just have different personalities. Neither are too shy but one doesn't really play when you get him out and the other loves to run about!
