Why do Democrats have no idea what "separation of church and state" means?

It has noting to do with keeping religion out of the public sector. It deals with government establishing a sponsored religion to put it simply. Any religious figure should be able to debate the issues just like everyone else. liberals will never understand this. Just like they believe there is a "pursuit of happiness" clause in the Constitution. No, this was mentioned in the preamble to the Declaration of Independence. And has nothing to do with legislative law. I believe this type of stuff gains grounds with libs because they hear something, and like good little sheep, regurgitate anything thrown their way.

Update:

I'm not even religious. I mean I go to church twice a year maybe. So I'm not some over-reaching religious person trying to point out this liberal flaw.

Giving special exemptions from federal law based on religious belief could be seen as trying to establish that belief as the official religion, ergo violating the separation of church and state.

And since you seem obsessed with what is and isn't in the Constitution, might I remind you that "separation of church and state" isn't in the Constitution either. It comes from a letter Thomas Jefferson wrote discussing the freedom of religion clause of the First Amendment.

No, Democrats do know what separation of church and state means.

Their problem is they think the Constitution actually says that, when in fact it doesn't. The 1st Amendment refers to establishing a religion, which a far different thing than separation of church and state.

Furthermore, "Separation of Church and State" was written in a letter by Thomas Jefferson in 1802. Two things about this:

    1. It's long after the Constitution and Bill of Rights were ratified.

    2. Jefferson was NOT one of the Framers of the Constitution.

To believe that separation of church and state is what the 1st Amendment means just can't be backed up.

It means the government does not proclaim any religion at all. So when your government school puts up a sign saying that your heavenly father Jesus blesses all students who repent, then they are violating the separation of church and state. When your federal courthouse proclaims "I am the lord they god, Thou shalt have no other gods beside me", then they are likewise violating this concept.

And there is reams and reams of case law backing this up.

Read the federalist papers. This is not a difficult concept.

You don't have to be religious to ignorantly crap all over democrats.

Silly MacGyver. "Co-equal branches of government" only means the one(s) that Democrats currently occupy is more "equal" than the others.

How can we get to Utopia with that messy system in place?

But, that's not what the liberals want to hear. Libs only hear what they want and ignore everything else.

Oddly, that and freedom of speech are the only parts of the Constitution they seem to like. Everything else is "old" and "out of date."

    Weird...
