Lets be clear, the US President is a civilian, he is under no obligation to "return" salutes. He does not even have to acknowledge them. It would be rude and disrespectful not to, so all Presidents have some manner of acknowledging them. Most do salute in return. Depending on the military person you talk to, some think he should not salute since he is a civilian and the salute is a military greeting and sign of respect. I think it is fine for him to do so.

I think you are asking why he salutes? Because in the military, the lower ranking person salutes the higher ranking person first. The higher ranking person then returns the salute. The higher ranking person is still suppose to salute, regardless of rank, they just do after they have been saluted first by the lower ranking person.

Uh, what?
Soldiers salute him, he returns the salute. Could you try to make your question a little clearer...

of direction you salute him... if it bothers you than salute the place of work not the guy. in my view i think of he's a incredible guy... not my political leanings precisely (in specific situations i'm purely a hair to the magnificent of Rush Limbaugh)... yet salute him non-the-much less. appreciate him for what he's... your President... your Commander-in-chief!!
