what is the difference between .com .net and .gov?
I can pretty much tell what .gov means. It seams it's a government site but and if I am right then what is the difference between .com and .net and is there any more I should be aware of

Just S Guy is wrong. .com means 'commercial', not 'community'.
.org means 'organization', such as 'pbs.org'.
Most countries have their own 'dot'. (Canada is '.ca'.)
.gov is limited to official government websites ONLY.

.xxx is what is called a top level domain. The top-level domains such as .com and .net and .org are the highest level of domain names of the Internet. A top-level domain is also called a TLD. Top-level domains form the DNS root zone of the hierarchical Domain Name System. Every domain name ends in a top-level or first-level domain label.
