Building a speed control 2?
I want to build a speed control for a transfer pump I brought, I'd like to do it with a potentiometer, I know it's not the most efficient but I'm good with that. I have a 3 prong extension chord I want to use to connect it because I don't want to slice the chord on the pump. I'm going to run it from a battery to an inverter and then to the pump. Basically I want to know what value resistor I should use and how to wire this whole thing up. Thanks in advance.
Sorry to repose but I'm on a mobile device and it won't let me add details. The pump is 115v and 6amps I don't have it on me this is just from memory so I can't tell you the VAC with any certainty though I think it's 120. What would you recommend and how would I go about doing it? Thanks you guys are already a big help and again sorry for the repost.

You probably have an alternating current induction motor. If it is a capacitor-start motor, the starting mechanism will probably prevent operation at reduced speed. If it is a permanent split capacitor (PSC) motor or a shaded pole motor, reducing the voltage with a series rheostat may provide successful (but crude) speed control with a centrifugal pump load. If the pump is a positive displacement type, success is unlikely. For 120 VAC motor with 6 amps full-load current, a 25 ohm, 1000 watt rheostat would be the most likely choice.
