How is eating meat humane, socially acceptable, and normal?

First of all, you are murdering an innocent being that did nothing whatsoever to hurt you just so you can enjoy the taste of its flesh and blood for a few minutes. Second, as soon as that animal dies, it's body starts to rot, so you are essentially gnawing on a rotting, decomposing corpse. Third, human teeth are flat and therefore not designed to tear into another creature's flesh. Forth, there are thousands of other ways to get protein and proper nutrients with food like nuts, beans, and cheese. Also, there are lots of very tasty meat alternatives available at most grocery stores. Finally, it has been proven that animals like pigs, cows, and chickens have very advanced nervous systems and can feel pain as much as we can. How can people just casually say, "oh I just can't give up meat! ahaha!"? Is the suffering of thousands of animals FUNNY to people? Also, the whole "vegetarians are hypocrites because plants are alive too" is bullsh!t. Plants nervous systems are not advanced enough to feel pain or emotions. And, it isn't just eating meat that is the problem, it's the way the animals we eat are treated. Watch this video and you will see that animals are not simple "killed". They are tortured. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDea6L9gPD8 Everybody who uses the "other animals are carnivores too" argument is using an invalid argument. Other animals do not torture their prey. Wolves will jump on the back of a deer and snap neck off with it's teeth quickly. Humans hold cows in factories for years and taze them, kick them, cut off there horns, cut off their testicles, brand them, all without pain killers.

READ: I realize that this is not really an appropriate category to put this question in, but it's a really popular category and I wanted to see what all of the feminists and misogynists had to say about this lol ;)

The video you posted opened me up to a better perspective on the food I consume and how it's made, but some of your reasons for not eating meat are wrong.

Dolphins are some of natures most dangerous, violent animals. They kill for fun, they rape--that's right--and they are also inhumane killers. I heard some where that dolphins enjoy throwing baby seals up into the air and watching them fall back and die. I also heard that dolphins can rape humans. Animals in nature can do some violent things to other animals--including humans. Many, many more examples of animals in nature can show you just how violent and morbid other animals can be. Even if animals kill other animals humanly, does that change the fact that they are, in fact, killing the other animal for food? This means your argument stands on the fact that humans kill animals inhumanly, and I have a reason to go against your argument because of that.

In the video I watched, I saw agribusiness and the propaganda against it. The video was made to show you how bad agribusiness truly is, and I can agree with you on that, but agribusiness isn't the only market, you know. I learned about agriculture and all of the many choices American citizens have. Some farmers don't do what the video showed you because they want to keep the traditional aspect of farming. They give the animals free air, freedom, and they don't torture the poor animals like in the video. But these farmers make a lot less money than the farmers in agribusiness. People need to stop buying products from companies that treat animals the way the big businesses, like Wall Mart, do. But, in the end the animals end up dead. So arguing against people consuming meat is pointless. It's going to happen either way, because humans have been eating meat for hundreds and hundreds of years. But big business companies are the only companies that treat animals like dirt, not all companies. They've separated themselves from the workers, the animals, and the consumers, because all they want is money.

How does this connect to your argument? You admitted that animals kill other animals for food but in a humane way. So, that means, if a farmer treats the animals nicely and doesn't abuse them, wouldn't it make it all right to consume the animals? I mean, other animals do it too, so wouldn't it make sense for humans to do it too? Lastly, agribusiness treats all animals like crap. I can't give up milk, meat, and other animal produced products; that's asking for too much. We should start treating animals with some humane respect. And people who can easily slam a pig onto the ground to kill it have serious issues.

First, every other animal in the world that is an omnivore also murders innocent beings, but you consider it merely the law of nature, yet when we do it, it is wrong? Second, as soon as a plant is pulled from the ground, it is dying, so you are essentially gnawing on a rotting decomposing plant. Third, canines are used for gripping and tearing and are mostly found in omnivores and carnivores. Also the human digestive system precisely fits in the average tract for omnivores. Forth, thousands of vegetarians have to take supplements to recieve the proper nutrition that humans need because a vegetarian diet simply doesnt provide it. Finally, unless you live in a mud hut or a tree, you are killing animals with advanced nervous systems, which makes you a hypocrit. It seems you are right. I didnt watch your video you included. I have consistently shown you to be incorrect in every finding so far. No reason to continue. *edit Hunters kill their prey quickly, generally consume the meat soon after killing and until the killing itself the animal leads a natural life. So you are ok with that? If not, then your argument isnt against the treatment of animals, but the fact that animals are being eaten period. If that is your argument, then the "other animals eat meat too" argument is a perfectly valid response.

Interesting. I didn't know that part about the wolves killing deer humanely.

I agree with everything you've written, but I would like to make a few points: Part of your argument is about establishing that this is a disgusting practice, and therefore civilized people wouldn't partake in it. But there are other things that are disgusting which societies make exceptions for. The most obvious one is sex. It's disgusting to swallow another person's sweat, saliva, or worse, bodily fluids from their genitals, yet we do it regularly. There are things that "civilized" societies do that are disgusting. It's part of the balance between our animal nature and our progression into the unnatural "civilized" world.

Assuming you believe it's natural to eat meat (and most people do, although I'm not so sure) then eating meat, like sex, could fall into this category.

Also, you say the "other animals eat meat" argument is BS because they kill their prey humanely. Just out of curiosity, does that mean that people who hunt animals but kill them humanely are okay in your book?

I'm just pointing out some flaws in your argument, not disagreeing with you. I actually agree that it's inhumane to eat meat, just because I don't understand how any civilized, responsible person can be okay with the torture of animals, no matter how they try to rationalize it in their minds. For a long time, I ate meat and told myself it was tragic what happened to animals, but we had to do it because it's our nature. One day I woke up and realized that maybe being a "civilized person" goes beyond the definition our society has of the word "civilized." To me, being civilized means that I would never wish that kind of suffering on another being, no matter what rationalization there was. Even if it was proved that being a vegetarian was unnatural, I think a civilized person would choose to live unnaturally, rather than kill another sentient being. It's like if you were raised to believe that being a cannibal was natural, would you keep killing other people and eating them, or would you decide to do the right thing, regardless of what was "nature?" I think most people don't grasp what it means to truly be a civilized person.

I'm a vegetarian and agree with your comments. It's easy for people to eat meat, so they don't really think about where it comes from. If everyone had to kill their own animals, skin them and cut them into edible portions, there would be a lot more vegetarians around.

People use the argument that it's natural, but it's not natural to buy meat in neat little packages from the supermarket. It's natural to kill them in the wild and eat what you kill.

This reminds me of a childhood story from when I was around eleven years old. My pig was on his side bleeding out after I slit his throat for a feast. Two minutes later when we began sitting down again my pig stood back up and started walking, I had to take his whole head off. Our family did eat well and it was a great time.

I would like to add most animals we consume are bred purely for this purpose. These are animals that would never have existed in the wild.

I have yet to find a tasty "meat alternative." The description even sounds vile.

It is survival of the fittest. We need to eat. Something must be destroyed to that end. And humans are actually designed to be omnivorous. Are you actually suggesting that we have been an agricultural species from the beginning and are only now taking up eating meat?

Your argument that other predators are humane is uneducated at best. You need to watch more Discovery or Animal Planet to see how nature is far more cruel than any human made charnel house. Or perhaps even read a book about a predator. Any predator.

Humans are omnivores. We have dietary needs, history, and teeth to show that. Our teeth are for tearing and grinding.

I don't eat most meat, because it feels morally wrong to me. Do I think that makes me stupid? Yes, of course. I'm going against nature.

It is pretty disgusting. Animal farming has a terrible environmental impact too in terms of waste and pollution, and it's affecting the rate of climate change (animal give off greenhouse gases). And it's more likely to give you food poisoning than vegetables, and there a link between meat and colon cancer too. Not good.

So, you said that it's possible for humans to get protein other ways, but way back in the day, our ancestors needed it to survive and be healthy. And yes, they are tortured and yes, it is wrong and needs to be stopped but honestly, sacrificing meat is not making an impact. meat is still going to be produced no matter what, so might as well eat it if it's there. We will never see the day where meat production is stopped, being vegetarian isn't stopping animals from torture, they will be tortured either way. I have nothing against vegetarians, it's a personal choice; but so is deciding to eat meat. WHo really cares?
