Is Smithers from the Simpsons gay?

I've loved the Simpsons for years but have noticed lately that Smithers appears to have a little 'too much' affection for his boss Mr Burns. Is he supposed to be gay? Should I continue to let my 12 year old son watch this?

This seems to come up every once and a while.... that is... whether The Simpsons is an appropriate show for children to watch.

Smithers is indeed gay. But it's rarely brought up... and even when it is... it is not overt. He is not flamboyant or sexually active at any point.

I grew up watching The Simpsons... I have learned so much from that show its crazy. Literature, culture, family life, laughter, honor, loyalty....

There are so many characters on the Simpsons that represent people in all walks of life.

Smithers might be gay.... But Ned Flanders is a good Christian man.... Principal Skinner the Vietnam Vet.... Marge the loving mother.... Lisa the academic.... Homer the loveable buffoon.... Gill the woefully unlucky guy...Bart the trouble maker (but he always seems to learn his lesson)....

the point i'm trying to make is.... there is a lot to be learned from The Simpsons. You cannot protect your child from the world forever... and I think that some things can be better explained to a young mind through story telling. And the Simpsons do it so well.

This Sunday will be the 500th episode of The Simpsons.... they have covered a ton of topics since 1990.... And I can't recall anyone ever being "outraged" by the Simpsons.

But in the end....it's up to you to decide whether it's appropriate for your son.

Source(s): @KF ... Just to be clear... Smithers and Burns are not "lovers"... Burns does not reciprocate and often changes the subject when things get awkward. (accidental thumb down. my bad)

Yes, Matt Groening wants to portray a strong love affection between Smithers and Mr. Burns. Yes, Smithers is gay but this fact should NOT hinder you son from watching The Simpsons. I don't get why parents are afraid of letting their kids to be aware of what reality is. Besides, The Simpsons always have moral lessons that can help your son. So pls, don't stop your son watching The Simpsons.

Always has been. But why would a gay character effect whether or not you allow you son to watch it? it's not anything uncommon and not something kids his age don't see.

Theres a lot of things that suggest he is. As when he is seen rollerskating in short shorts and doing it in a really girly manner. Also he likes to collect dolls(malibu stacy, i think) and he does seem to be in love with mr.burns.

yep. he's gay. but i don't see why that would make it not okay for your twelve year old son to watch.
