Tablet, laptop, e-reader, or smartphone for college?

I'll be a college freshman in the fall, and my parents will buy me one to two of the above items. I don't know which to choose or which will be most useful!

-I don't think that I really need a tablet... but it could function as an e-reader with internet; but it's not helpful for writing a paper

-With a laptop I'll be able to type papers and do more research than I could with a tablet

-e-reader's are great; I really want a kindle. I know that some textbooks are available on Kindles, but not all are. I don't know if the textbooks are more or less expensive on kindles. I do love to read regular books on the kindles though

-smartphones are soo expensive--well the plans are. I know I would feel guilty that my parents would be paying the monthly bill and wouldn't let me pay for it. But the phones are also so convenient!

So I'm just wondering what you guys currently have and what you do/don't like about them.

You absolutely NEED a laptop. If you don't get one you'll always have to go in to college to study and do assignments. I've heard Lenovo, HP and Apple are good brands.

Just make sure you get Microsoft Office and a good antivirus!

Kindle is not that good for college textbooks because it changes the page numbers. Knowing what page you got particular information from is vital in college because you have to always reference your sources.

You don't really need an ereader, tablet or smartphone.

My advice would be to get a good reliable laptop, an antivirus, Microsoft Office and a USB memory stick.

I agree with the first answerer. All of the items are a laptop. Get a Macbook Pro, it's light, very portable, you add a word processor and you'll use it for years to come. It's just great, worth the price. Apple is highest rated for tech support, reliability, and battery life.

But if a Macbook is a bit too expensive, just go to your local Best Buy and ask one of the employees to give you an insight of what could work for a college student.

I currently have the HP mini 210 Netbook. It's alright, lightweight and all but it does freeze (not often, though), have to keep the charger with me at all times and I'm not sure how long it'll last. I also have an iPad 2 but don't use it often as it's not as convenient; I mostly use it to read books and check out what textbooks they can offer. In other words, I'm dying to get a Macbook.

Of all those items that you listed is a laptop. No need wasting money on an e-reader or tablet, and you can just get a regular phone with texting & calling you don't really need a smart phone.

Depends on your demand. As far as functionality considered laptop is the best choice. But if you r looking for mobility then go for tablet over smartphone. Look for public reviews, ratings ans tips for ease in deciding. Compare and choose the best suited for you. :)

Reading the reserve instead of viewing the movie is the ultimate way to see what the writer designed. Reading uses your imagination, hones your reading skills, and can transform your life vocabulary.

A laptop will be the most useful of the devices you list. You'll be able to read on it, do homework, type papers etc.
