What would you say is the last great war movie?
War movies include holocaust movies, political war movies, etc for this q
And great means a masterpiece or a near masterpiece.... 9/10 or 10/10 kind of movie
For me, I'd say The Pianist. That was a great movie. Ever since then- no war movie has ever really interested me, maybe I'm not looking far enough, lol.

Hi Madeleine!! ;)
I agree with you, The Pianist is one of the last great war movies...other masterpieces probably are "The Thin Red Line" or "Letters To Iwo Jima", for me.
BQ:
Shindler's List
Full Metal Jacket
Platoon
The Thin Red Line
Saving Private Ryan and Letters From Iwo Jima (ex-aequo)! :D

1. The Thin Red Line- Terrence Malick- Malick is a genius director, the sweeping shots of Guadalcanal (which was actually Queensland Australia) island are beautiful, basically every shot is perfect and the cuts between the soldiers and nature the helpless baby bird fallen from it's nest. Most throught prevoking and beautiful illustration of what can be achieved in film.
2. All quiet on the Western Front- Lewis Milestone- masterpiece
3. Platoon- Oliver Stone- The scene where charlie sheen wakes to see the death and destruction that has been caused and then the dear- so peaceful and innocent- BEST SCENE
4. Born on The Fourth of July- Oliver Stone- Tom Cruise outstanding performance.
5. Full Metal Jacket- Stanley Kubrick- "the dead know only one thing: it is better to be alive" direction, acting, writing all flawless kubrick is my hero and a god!

Easy.
In the oriiginal 1930's "All Quiet on the Eastern Front"
A war weary soldier in a trench - during a rare silence from the constant shelling - spots a butterfly perched atop a sand bag. You see his arm reach out to the butterfly...as he nearly touches it you hear a rifle shot and his arm falls limp.

Hey Suicidal!!!
I'm going to go with 'Grave of Fireflies'. The reason for that is simply 'cause I feel it'll be the first and last animated movie that'll truly make one feel grief and pain whilst watching it. Sure movies like Wall-E, Toy Story and Bambi have gotten people teary-eyed but this movie was the last war movie I saw that was poignant and heart-wrenching at the same time. To bring about the same feeling I felt while watching Schindler's List but with an animated movie is quite a feat in itself.
I really can't put it as brilliantly as Roger Ebert does:
"Grave of the Fireflies is an emotional experience so powerful that it forces a rethinking of animation...a powerful dramatic film that happens to be animated, and I know what the critic Ernest Rister means when he compares it to "Schindler's List" and says, "It is the most profoundly human animated film I've ever seen.""
BA-
1) Grave of Fireflies
2) Schindler's List
3) Apocalypse Now
4) Platoon
5) Das Boot
BA2- Undeniably, the opening sequence of Saving Private Ryan.

5.full metal jacket
6.apocalypse now

BQ2 : the opening scene of saving private ryan, one of the most impressive opening scenes in the history of cinema and the little "red dress" girl scene from schindler's list, anyone that did not feel empaty for that girl while watching that scene must be dead of devoid of emotions and also the death scene of sargeant elias in platton, never death and music mixed so well in one movie scene it's pure movie filming perfection.
