Instead of building the Keystone XL Pipelines, why not build oil refineries in Canada?
I'm genuinely interested in why there needs to be a 7 billion Dollar pipeline from Morgan to Steele City and Cushing, Oklahoma to Texas? Why not build oil refineries in Canada to process the crude oil and then transport/distribute it from there?
Please provide any sources if you can. Thanks in advance.
At least one of you have mentioned jobs for US citizens as a reason for building the pipeline. Why would you allow something to be built just to create jobs? Shouldn't what is being built serve a larger public good and purpose and be done only if the benefits outweigh the costs? If your only answer is jobs, then it seems that you do not fully understand the sophisticated nature of the project.
I'm unsure at this point what exactly the complete cost-benefit analysis is, but a number of sources have pointed out that the Keystone XL Pipeline project will only generate a small number of permanent jobs for US citizens (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505123_162-57361212/ke...
Another one of you have pointed out that a number of drilling companies already have land leased to drill for oil, but are not doing so. The process of extracting and refining crude oil from tar sands is an expensive one in terms of energy and resources used (http://o/

Sounds good to me. Keystone is about Canadian oil, not American oil. Rebuilding our infrastructure is a far better way to create jobs.
Keystone’s smaller predecessor has had over a dozen leaks. Why risk the health and lives of Americans living all along its planned route when solar and ocean wave, and wind power are all clean and free? The American people will suffer the asthma, the cancer, the down-wind destruction of the ecosystem from the pipeline, but we will see no advantages. If we’re going to deal with all that, we should at least get cheap gasoline, but that isn’t the plan.
Germany was so successful in their program to give tax breaks to those who would install solar power on their homes that they discontinued the program because they had more power than their grid would hold.
Here we are in the United States with our infrastructure crumbling and decaying, and we’re having a fight about whether we’re going to transport Canadian oil to Texas refineries to ship down to South America and Europe. It’s insane. We should be working on our infrastructure and building light rail.

Because building oil refineries in Canada will give jobs to Canadians. If you haven't noticed, the USA has 8.3% unemployment. Not to mention all the people who have given up on looking for work. Not to mention that we need to be self-sufficient in SOMETHING. Not to mention that the 7 billion dollar pipeline would be an INVESTMENT and bring us some good in the long-run.

I'm wondering why oil companies aren't using the permits they have to drill for oil in America like they claim they want to.

Because we already have enough refineries to fulfill demand on the continent of North America. Why have pipes running water to your home when you can just have it shipped?

That is one question they cannot or will not answer. I asked that before and just got stupid rhetoric back.
