Radiator fluid leak from overflow?

1990 Toyota Corolla- events in order of happening

Drove about 15 miles on freeway non stop at 65 mph reached our destination. Drove another 5 miles at 65mph on freeway to next destination. Noticed smoke and leaking radiator fluid from overflow (a lot) waited for car to cool replaced with new fluid. Drove 3/4 miles on regular road, heater hose busted and let out pretty much everything. Replaced hose and again the fluid. Drove bout 4/5 miles on regular road and still overflows from overflow tank. Any ideas?

Update:

UPDATE car sat for 1.5 hours then we drove from our last destination to home which was 2.5 miles radiator was a little hot but no overflow or leaks or steam so now I'm a little confused.

Update 2:

Answer to some of problems: when car idles no leak only happened after driving. There's no leak or white smoke from exhaust see y I'm puzzled. The fan does kick on when engine gets hot.

There a couple of things to check one is like the others already said. the other three are the possibility of a bad thermostat control switch or fan relay which controls the blower fan under the hood in front of the radiator, another is a possibility of head gasket has gone bad, lets hope it's not that. And a possible water pump.

I would do this first: fill the coolant one more time and let the car sit there and idle for about 15 mins. as the engine heats up the fan should kick on in front of the motor, if it doesn't and the coolant starts to come out of overfill before the fan kicks on it needs one of the things above “switch or relay”. if the motor never really heats up and it starts coming out of the over fill or you see white smoke coming out of the exhaust, the head gasket needs checked.

You may also have a bad water pump; if so you will have a leak some where under the front of the motor where the fan belts are as soon as you fill the system up and sometimes 5 mins. after you shut it down you can spot the leak.

    Good luck

Try changing the radiadtor cap. Then when it's still cold. pinch the upper rad hose and rev the engine. You will feel the hose collapse. When it warms up do the same thing. If the hose is still cool and collapses when you rev it change the thermostat. If the upper hose gats hot as the engine warms up and with a new cap it still bubbles over into the overflow then get the system pressure tested for a head gasket. You can kinda check that yourself if the hoses feel as hard as a tire then pressure is building.

Um ...yeah ...your car is overheating.

When was the last time you did anything with the cooling system on the car? Outside of your busted hose, when was the last time it was flushed and filled?

At any rate, you've probably got somewhere in the neighborhood of 250K on the odo ...if this is the original radiator, it *is* time for a new one. The thing is probably pretty well clogged up with corrosion and sediment and can't flow sufficiently to shed the engine heat like it used to.

If you've never done anything to the cooling system, now might be a good time to do some repairs and preventive work.

im thinking that your radiator cap no longer is holding its pressure like it is supposed to. I would go ahead and replace the radiator cap and see if this helps any. Im hoping its old and tired and needs replacing. After that if you still have a problem and the vehicle keeps overheating you may need to do some pressure testing to see what the problem is .

sounds like your thermostat is bad. how many miles do you have? have you ever had the antifreeze drained and flushed be for? Does your heat work normal?..........I would change the t-stat and gasket along with the antifreeze. I would also check both the upper and the lower hoses

Sounds like you need a water pump and thermostat!
