Bar spacing for male rats?
I'm buying my two male rats a new cage this weekend, I've found a huge cage, lots of levels and space for hammocks and toys but the bar spacing is 1inch wide, is that too wide of male rats? They're almost fully grown and quite large, but their current bar spacing is only 1.25cm.
Anyone with male rats have experience with cages? most cages labelled as Rat cages here in England aren't big enough really, IMO,

Hi,
For my rats I have 1/2 inch bar spacing. My big males couldnt fit through a 1 inch space! Yet baby rats can escape from 1 inch in seconds. But don't fret because if you visit a hardware store you should be able to find metal mesh (hardware cloth works too).I completely understand that commercial rat cages are to small, I have to purchase ferret cages for my rats! But if you add the metal mesh, there should be no escaped rats (because rats are so curious its always good to be cautios!).
But if hardware cloth isnt an option, adult males should be okay in 1 inch spacing, but if your adopting baby males, I would advise you to use the metal mesh or hardware cloth.
And lastly, have fun with your rats when you adopt them!

Rats should have 1/2 inch bar spacing. Even big fat males can fit through small spaces. You could purchase the large cage and then cover in in hardware cloth to keep them from escaping. (it's like a wire mesh, can be found at hardware stores)
