    45-70 I already have a bolt action .17 for plinking and small game hunting.

    Even for me - an admitted rimfire enthusiast, single shot .22 rifles are not my favorite. I'd probably have more fun with the .45-70 as my patience for dealing with a single shot rifle would likely be about the same.

    If you had unlimited funds for ammo and a tough shoulder, the .45-70 would be by far the most fun. The .22 lr is extremely cheap to shoot.

    If money is not a problem or you reload then the 45-70 could be more fun. Ammo for it is expencive. If money is a problem, then 22LR are a lot of fun. Sure you can't hunt big game with it, but twenty bucks will keep you shooting all weekend.

    Probably 45-70. I would hand load my ammo and punch paper and ring gongs at 100 yards and beyond. 22 just wouldn't be the same.
