How stupid can a bird owner be? Are there no limits? I thought I couldn't be surprised anymore.?

A person goes away for 2 weeks leaving their Sun Conure to fly free in the house. Upon returning the bird is injured on the floor---weak, can't walk & appears bloated. Owner takes bird to vet. The bloating is actually from the bird having not been able to poop for days, possibly more than a week. The vet gets over 100cc's of fecal material out of the bird. A 30 cc measure is what may come w a bottle of cough syrup. Anyway, nearly a half cup of slop. The bird prob flew into a window, mirror or other solid surface to sustain it's injury. And yeah, it died before leaving the vets office. The owner said they had done this before (left the bird out alone & unsupervised for weeks) but the worst that ever happened was they found it hanging tangled in drapery cords.

How do I know this actually happened? I'm at my vets office now (w dogs) and she was telling a group of colleagues about it. I was standing right there listening. So now a sweet Sun Conure is dead & suffered greatly. The idiot owner is prob wondering what kind of bird to get next. I'm not a person prone to violence & I hate feeling like this but I would love to choke the life out of that owner---is that wrong? I just had to vent (no pun intended).

Please everyone, review your bird first aid kit plus how secure their environment is and keep the darlings safe. Our pets only survive based on the care and safe keeping we provide them.

Update:

COMMENTS: Thanks every one for reading my question.

@ lou---very good explanation about bird vents & poop (lol), thanks.

@ Walkers, good luck, you're really taking a risk, you never know if your bird could get frightened from a loud noise, end up on the floor & get hurt (tangled in wires, have a lamp fall on him, whatever....)

REGARDING a report to animal control (USA): Unfortunately what this person did is only considered stupid & idiotic, not cruelty.

FOR the person who thinks keeping birds as pets is awful, well maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Since caveman days humans have had the desire to keep animals & since that isn't going to change the best thing to do is encourage safe, humane keep for all animals (imho). I'm just say'n.

I cannot imagine the stupidity of people like that. Bad things happen when you are watching, never mind no supervision for two weeks. Odd they cared enough to take it to the vet when they came home. Yes its wrong to choke someone. Let's put him in a room with birdseed and water for two weeks alone and see what happens.

To enlighten The Bridge Dweller (like that name): if a bird gets injured as this one did and defecates w the poo getting stuck on the feathers, it will build up over time to the point it blocks the opening so no more poop comes out---it sounds like that's what may have happened. If a person can't go to the bathroom they have to be admitted to the hospital for treatment---it can kill them. Same w animals brainiac. Waste material left inside the body of any living thing will cause toxic levels of bacteria that overwhelm the body not to mention causing kidneys to shut down.

The owner of this bird must be pretty dumb since they were given at least one chance to learn from their mistake when they found the bird tangled in cords but not dead. I guess some people are incapable of learning, too bad their pets hafta suffer : (

    That's terrible :( :(

To the person who said "its just a bird not a dog"

Birds are FAR smarter than dogs. The 3rd most popular pet and that's a horrible thing to say. Dogs are not the only pets in the world...

I own a Macaw, and we leave his cage open during the day while we r at work.

But he is clipped and doesn't fly, and he doesn't get off his cage. (he has a giant perch habitat above his cage)

If u are going to be gone weeks at a time, why own a bird in the first place? they require so much care and attention DAILY.

Gosh at least get a friend to look after it :-(

Poor thing! Sun congress are beautiful too.

That is really really bad :/. I never leave my by alone!! few days ago there was a small accident my cockatiel Tootie was walking on top of the cage chewing on his/hers toys and I don't know how it happened but his/hers toe got stuck in between the cage and i was really scared! however, luckily i heard the screaming and moved the toe from there and now I've tied strings around the cage that has a gap so this problem wouldn't happen!.

I never leave them alone,I'm with them and they have accidents or get in trouble few times. for example - few months back Snowy (my other cockatiel) was playing tarzan with the cage climbing upside down etc and i turned around to look if he/she was okay and I seen Snowy hanging on one feet on the top of the cage luckily he/she didn't call down on the bar!!

I strongly suggest you bring this up with the RSPCA curelty line. Don't let people like that get away and buy another bird it's wrong.. -- http://www.rspca.org.uk/utilities/contactus

Oh wow.. to The Bridge Dweller : It still was a living animal. Maybe we should lock you up and not allow you to poop? You wouldnt like that, would you. :| The owner, could have at least taken the bird to a relative >__> i hate irresponsible owners.

Hey person below, I wouldn't talk there, she's older then you and is far more experienced...sorry, for having feeling =s for ALL animals... -_-

I'm on your side there Lady, (can't see your name) owners just don't know when and were the linits are... I want to be a person when I grow up to come to poples houses and charge for them not caring for their animals and take them from them, and re habilitate them and give them a better life!

those people that you mentioned are obviously not in the right mind! How CRUEL!

Source(s): I'm very sorry about this situation... :(

Why come on here your message will fall on deaf ears, You should report this to the authorities .I have reported people like that to the R.S.P.CA. and the were prosecuted

As a vet it is their duty to do this by not reporting it your vet is condoning it.

It seems there are those that think the wrongdoer should not be reported??????

No more idiotic than all those folks who think keeping birds in their home is just fine. Can hardly wait for the space aliens to come and put all bird owners in gilded cages.

Who cares, its just a bird, its not like its a dog.

Besides, what does not pooping has to do with being left inside the house?
